What is Goal 3 of the SDGs?
The third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is aimed at ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages. Many of the target areas under SDG 3 relate to the right to health as a whole and to specific aspects of the right to health as established by human rights law and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Additionally, a number of the topics addressed in the SDG 3 targets, for example those relating to tobacco use, are under the specific governance rubric of the WHO, and others, such as certain pharmaceutical access issues, are at least in part under the governance rubric of the WTO.
What is the importance of the health SDG?
The third goal 3 aspires to ensure health and well-being for all, including a bold commitment to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other communicable diseases by 2030. The 3rd SDG also aims to achieve universal health coverage, and provide access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for all.
Over the last decade, the number of childhood deaths has been cut in half. This proves that it is possible to win the fight against most diseases. Still, international organizations are spending an astonishing amount of money and resources on treating illnesses that are surprisingly easy to prevent. Thus, the third goal for worldwide Good Health tries to promote healthy lifestyles, preventive measures and modern, efficient healthcare for everyone.
What types of policies are in line with the health Goal?
Amongst the policies in line with the Good Health SDG are:
- Reduction of the global maternal mortality
- Reduction of the global neonatal and child mortality
- Reduction of the epidemics of infectious diseases
- Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse
- Guarantee universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services
- Reduction of the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination
- Health financing and workforce
- Emergency preparedness
