What is Goal 5 of the SDGs?
The fifth goal of the SDGs is aimed at achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. It calls attention to the forms of discrimination that continue to affect the participation of women across all sectors of society and activity on an equal level.
Gender equality is a basic human right, as well as an essential factor for building a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity as a whole.
What is the importance of the gender equality SDG?
Women and girls account for half of the world’s population, and improving their quality of life with real gender equality will bring benefits that will have a global impact on society as a whole.
Gender inequality persists everywhere and it stagnates social progress. Women continue to be underrepresented at all levels of political leadership. Around the world, women and girls perform a disproportionate share of unpaid domestic work.
Inequalities faced by girls can begin right at birth and keep up with them throughout their lives. In some countries, girls are deprived of access to health care or proper nutrition, leading to a higher mortality rate. Hence, decent work and basic rights would lead to improvements in education and health, which in the long run would have a positive impact on girls and those who depend on them.
What types of policies are in line with the gender equality Goal?
The types of policies that are in line with the Gender Equality Goal are:
- Policies aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation;
- Policies aimed at eliminating all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation;
- Policies aimed at recognizing and valuing unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection, as well as the promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate;
- Policies aimed at ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.
