Position Description

EnCompass LLC is seeking a Director of Business Management to design, implement, and oversee successful business practices and processes within the Learning & Leadership Development (L&LD) and Gender Equity & Inclusive Practices (GEIP) practice areas. The person in this role will lead staff in accordance with the company’s good business practices, policies, and values.The Director of Business Management will work closely with the Vice President of L&LD and GEIP, practice area Directors and Associate Directors, and the leaders and staff of the Talent Management, Finance, Business Development, Contracts, and Operations teams to ensure practice area productivity and efficiency, including implementing business strategies and processes, monitoring and evaluating financial performance of the projects, allocating and assigning resources, and supervising designated employees.

This is a full-time position located at the EnCompass principal office in Silver Spring, Maryland, and follows the EnCompass flexible hybrid work model with split time between telework and the office.

Must be legally authorized to work in the US for any employer without sponsorship for a work visa or permit.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions:

Processes

  • Support the Vice President (VP) by managing and assisting with day-to-day business operations of the L&LD and GEIP practice areas (e.g., financial forecasting/tracking, profitability, overhead, budget analysis and planning)
  • Work with appropriate managers and staff to design, oversee, and manage the streamlining of business processes L&LD and GEIP to ensure they are efficient and productive
  • Collaborate with the VP and practice area leadership to support compliance with company policies and adherence to legal guidelines
  • In collaboration with practice area leadership, manage staff billability to help identify and obtain appropriate levels of staffing needed to successfully achieve project, practice area, portfolio, and company goals

Business Growth

  • Work with the VP of L&LD and GEIP and the Finance team to develop financial metrics for projects and pricing strategies for cost proposal efforts
  • Assess practice area performance by analyzing and interpreting data, metrics, and financial reports, and providing guidance to practice area leadership to support the long-term financial health of contracts
  • Design tools and processes for effective management and forecasting of revenue and direct expenses across the portfolio
  • Work with the VP of L&LD and GEIP to track, analyze, and forecast profitability outcomes
  • Track, analyze, and forecast staff billability
  • Support the VP of L&LD and GEIP in managing indirect spending within the established indirect cost rate structure and rates
  • Support the VP in the Quarterly Business Review process through preparation, including designing/adapting tools to monitor progress to report to the Executive Team and linking data and metrics to the overall financial health of the organization
  • Provide training to practice area leadership and others on using and interpreting financial metrics
  • Support the practice area Corporate Officers in regular oversight and management of project financial performance
  • Contribute to company business development initiatives, particularly in the areas of cost strategy and cost proposal development
  • Support the VP of L&LD and GEIP with managing practice area overhead discretionary budget

Human Resources

  • Collaborate with the practice area leadership in workforce planning activities, assessing the appropriate number of staff given current and projected opportunities and revenue streams, and business development needs
  • May support practice area leadership in the collaboration with Talent Management team to recruit, hire, onboard; ensures practice area hiring managers are trained and follow EnCompass’ fair, legal, inclusive, and effective hiring practices
  • Assist in the development and implementation of performance standards related to business and financial good practice for practice area team
  • Adhere to EnCompass gender and inclusive development best practices and serves as a model for staff regarding gender equality and inclusive development

Company Management Support

  • Engage as a member of the Senior Management Group (SMG) to provide input and feedback on and communicate about company policies, strategies, and activities
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other EnCompass teams to support integration of expertise and knowledge across the company
  • Serve as a model of EnCompass approaches, values, and culture for all staff, especially for members of the L&LD and GEIP teams
  • Foster an appreciative work culture of collaboration and teamwork for knowledge sharing and learning

General

  • Engage fully as a member of the EnCompass staff team, including participating in staff meetings and other EnCompass convenings
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Qualifications

Academic Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and 18 years of experience; Associate’s degree and 16 years of experience; Bachelor’s degree and 14 years of experience; Master’s degree and 12 years of experience; or doctoral degree and 10 years of experience.
  • Degree in business management, business administration, international development, leadership, or related field if held

Experience and Skills

Required

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience overseeing corporate, program, and project-level finance (including forecasting financial standing), human resources, and operations for U.S. Government funded projects and organizations (USAID strongly preferred)
  • Prior experience managing budget tools including direct experience in forecasting, management of indirect costs, billability, and other financial processes for complex and long-term international development contracts
  • Experience leading or managing U.S. government contracts under a variety of contract mechanisms
  • Experience supervising individuals and teams with a focus on professional growth
  • Business development experience including cost proposals and strategies
  • Demonstrated analytical ability and business insight
  • Proven experience with business and strategy development processes
  • Ability to work in a collaborative work environment that utilizes Appreciative Inquiry, and to guide and model strengths-based approaches for the team
  • Ability to confidently engage with staff at all levels to define needs and expectations and to collaborate
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and facilitation skills including experience communicating with a variety of audiences with a high degree of cultural sensitivity
  • Strong planning, organization, strategic thinking, project management, and problem-solving skills
  • An appetite for learning, curiosity, and a willingness to experiment in new ways of working
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience in applying Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and gender integration and inclusive development best practices and ability to incorporate those practices in leadership and management
  • Fluency/high proficiency with primary Microsoft 365 applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Fluency in language(s) other than English
  • Experience working or living in more than one country

The pay range for this role allows for the wide variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, certifications, and other business and organizational needs. At EnCompass, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $160,000-$180,000
