ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Under the supervision of the Climate Journalism Officer, the Environmental Media Consultant will provide thematic, regional and editorial expertise to Internews and project partners as part of our new SharaKa project. The SharaKa project aims to promote climate justice in Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia by increasing the ability of civil society and citizens to influence and co-create inclusive climate action safely and meaningfully. The project will build a network of learning and exchange between climate CSOs and media actors to enhance the production of meaningful and inclusive information to the wider public. The project will be implemented by Hivos, Internews, the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI) and the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ), in close collaboration with local climate CSOs and independent media outlets and actors.
LOGISTICS
This position will be based in either Tunisia or the UK. This is a remote-based role, and all candidates based in those locations will be considered.

This is a part-time limited-duration consultancy position, with an expected term of 12 months.

SCOPE OF WORK:
- Work with the Climate Journalism Officer and ARIJ to develop an Earth Journalism Network MENA chapter – which will convene journalists in the region interested in reporting on the environment to discuss challenges, share information and build cross-border relationships – and serve as an advisor and facilitator alongside ARIJ;
- Participate in the selection process for a story grant call and support chosen journalists with thematic expertise, sourcing ideas and other needs throughout the training and story production process;
- Provide editorial support (in Arabic and English) on project activities including a tipsheet and videos, including by providing input on thematic areas of interest and reviewing agendas, drafts and scripts;
- Support Internews coordinate with partners to organize webinars or virtual workshops in Arabic with editors in the region;
- Create lists of media and journalists in target countries to use for project activities;
- Support Climate Journalism Officer in providing updates on activities for reports to the funder and for Internews and EJN communications, including newsletter, website and social media;
- Other services as needed to achieve project outputs and outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
Required
- Experience covering or researching environmental and/or climate journalism in the MENA region;
- Have established contacts with local or regional news outlets, journalists, editors and journalists’ networks;
- Experience facilitating webinars and online focus group discussions, among journalists and between the media and climate-focused CSOs;
- Experience with media training and/or producing resources such as courses, tipsheets and glossaries;
- Clear understanding and/or prior exposure of media context of Tunisia, Lebanon and Jordan;
- Fluency in both English and Arabic.
Preferred
Note: Candidates who do not have these preferred qualifications, but who are interested and willing to learn, are encouraged to apply.
- Experience creating or editing videos;
- Fluency in another regional language, such as French;
- Previous or current experience working as a journalist or editor in the region is strongly preferred.
