Light for the World is a global development organization. We empower people with disabilities and enable eye health services in low-income countries. Over the last three decades we improved health systems, enabled education for all, and amplified the voices of people with disabilities. We focus on the poorest and hardest to reach because that’s where we will have the biggest impact.

  • Eye Health – preventing blindness and promoting eye health for all.
  • Inclusive Education – ensuring children with disabilities receive quality, inclusive education.
  • Inclusive Economic Empowerment – ensuring that barriers are removed for men and women with disabilities to access decent work.

In Kenya, our country strategy for the year 2021-2025 focuses on empowering micro-entrepreneurs to build their capacities, disability inclusion in public and private sector institutions, employability skills among students with disabilities –with higher learning institutions, and influence policy and industry leaders through documented lessons.

Futuremakers Ready for Inclusive Sustainable Employment and Entrepreneurship (RISE/E) Kenya aims the program aims to prepare young people with and without disabilities for the world of work through employability skills training, mentorship, and exposure to the world of work through job shadowing, internships, and work placements.

The Future makers RISE/E Program focuses on:

  1. Supporting young people with disabilities and without in building self-confidence and skills, mostly focused on the soft skills and competencies required to be more competitive in securing their aspired employment, but where necessary also including technical skills.
  2. Supporting employers, either individually or in their networks, to increase their own confidence on disability inclusive workplaces and workforces, which influences greater demand and a more enabling environment for people with disabilities in accessing employment.

Role Profile

Light for the World is looking for an experienced Project Manager to organize and coordinate the RISEE program. He/she will provide strategic guidance to the project team in ways that promote the organization’s culture. He/she will be an excellent leader and will have experience of working with staff of different disciplines to produce results in a timely manner. The PM will also be able to develop efficient strategies and tactics. The goal is to ensure that all programs deliver the desirable outcome to our organization.

Key responsibilities

Program /Project management.

  • Coordinate planning, implementation and coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of RISEE program.
  • Oversee program narrative and financial reporting.
  • Ensuring implementation and compliance safeguarding policy and standards in program design and implementation.
  • Ensuring quality of project implementation while ensuring donor requirements and compliance are met with Light for the World quality standards.
  • Coordinating the project lead partner (Sightsavers) and other project partners including United Disabled Persons of Kenya and Riziki Source.

Program design and development.

  • Lead development and review of program/project proposals in line with the organizational overall strategic objectives, program requirements and its Theory of Change.
  • Provide strategic guidance and advice on the preparation of program/project proposals and workplans focusing on complementarity, feasibility, and budget development.

Grant Contract, Financial Management, donors’ compliance, and Reporting

  • Responsible in overall budget planning, and management together with grant team and ensure regular budget monitoring, proper forecasting.
  • Ensure project periodic narrative and financial reports, annual, bi-annual, Annual Program Outcome Measurements, partner reports are submitted according to program/project agreements.
  • Track program/project implementation are in line with the agreement and special conditions.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Conduct periodic and regular on-site monitoring visit, supportive supervision and ensure the project activities are on track.
  • Working closely with Sightsavers MERLA team, the PM will contribute to the development and dissemination of project learning products.
  • Ensure development of report retro plans that informs quality and timely reporting,
  • Coordinate planning, documentation and dissemination of best practices and learnings in collaboration with the MERLA and program Quality & Innovation teams.
  • Support the MERLA team in the development of monitoring tools, data collection tools and MERLA frameworks.

Partnership, Advocacy, and networking

  • Build relationships with the project partners, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities, Private and public institutions (employers)including relevant government agencies to promote inclusive work interventions.
  • Participate in the different national and international meetings/forums to increase evidence-based advocacy to influence Inclusive employment policy and practices.
  • Create awareness on public forums about Light for the World vision/mission, disability inclusion etc.

Representation

  • Represent the organization in the Standard chartered Bank meetings.
  • Represent the country office in relevant functions as may be assigned from time to time.
  • Represent Light for the World in different local/international meetings/events/Technical Working Groups/task forces/forums.

Requirements and skills

  • BSc/BA Degree in management or a relevant field; MSc/MA is a plus.
  • 5- 9 years proven experience as a Program Manager or other managerial position
  • Thorough understanding of project/program management techniques and methods
  • Excellent Knowledge of performance evaluation and change management principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office; working knowledge of program/project management software (Basecamp, MS Project etc.) is a strong advantage.
  • Outstanding leadership and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
