We from OpenIGO would like to present you with a unique opportunity to significantly boost your International Development career.

We know that many young professionals get frustrated by the lack of hands-on experience in knowing and solving the many challenges that development professionals face. We are also aware of the need to strengthen essential competencies in order to get ahead of the competition in the most prestigious development selection processes.

That’s why we are preparing the International Development Careers Experience (IDCE): a transformational event taking place during 5 weekends with immersive group case study challenges led by experts. It is your chance to jump-start your development career and get you ready to be a very successful professional in the field.

In this immersive experience, each week will consist of a cycle, where the 2 most important days are Saturday and Sunday. During the weekdays, you and your group will be able to schedule mentoring sessions if needed, but this is not mandatory: if your weekdays are busy, don’t worry, you will be able to enjoy the IDCE just the same!

Our lectures, mentoring sessions, and practical activities are carefully designed to take you to the next level in your development career: this is something you can’t find at university or any other place. CYCLE 2 | Hands-On: Practice Research & Policy Recommendations with Experts

Get an overview of the main challenges in International Development. We’ll also introduce you to the first exercise of the Group Case Study Challenge, in which you will develop a Policy Brief to tackle a specific country issue. This activity will be introduced here and you’ll know what is expected of you and your team for the next week.

Activities:

– Discuss the implications of Climate Change and its relation with the multiple areas of international development

– Present the course of actions adopted by IGOs to address climate change issues

– The speaker will present the main concepcts regarding the process of policy planning, implementation and monitoring.

– Explain the work of international professionals in research and policy recommendations

– How to create a policy brief

– How to analyze information effectively

Expected Duration: 3 hours and 40 min

After learning about the Research and Policy Recommendation exercise of the Group Case Study Challenge in the 1st week, you and your team will be able to schedule a mentoring session to clear any doubts before the presentations on the weekend!

Activities:

– The group should bring at least 2 concrete questions to discuss with the mentors regarding the R&PR deliverables;

– Each group will have access to a mentoring session consisting of 30 to 40 minutes to clarify questions regarding the deliverables of the practical activity.

Expected Duration: 30 to 40 min

Now that you have completed your policy brief and presentations, it’s time to present the results with your group! The feedbacks from the panelists will enrich this session to make sure that every team gets the best out of their presentation.

Activities:

– Each Group will have 10 minutes to present the summary of the deliverables

– The Panelists will ask questions after the presentations to clarify points.

Expected Duration: 3 hours and 25 min

CYCLE 3 | Hands-On: Practice Project Management Activities

After your policy recommendations were approved by the “government”, you’ll get the opportunity to create an actual “project concept note” and present it to experienced professionals! This activity will be introduced here and you’ll know what is expected of you and your team for the next week.

Activities:

– Map of two logics: Steering in a multi-organizational context vs. Leadership in an organisational context

– The set-up of international development projects: From government consultation to project implementation

– Key skills required by a professional in international development 

– Project Management Tools in International Cooperation

After learning about the second exercise of the Group Case Study Challenge in the 2nd week, you and your team will be able to schedule a mentoring session to clear any doubts before the presentations on the weekend!

Activities:

– The group should bring at least 2 concrete questions to discuss with the mentors regarding the deliverables;

– Each group will have access to a mentoring session consisting of 30 to 40 minutes to clarify questions regarding the deliverables of the practical activity.

Now that you have completed your project concept note and presentations, it’s time to present the results with your group! The feedbacks from the panelists will enrich this session to make sure that every team gets the best out of their presentation.

Activities:

– Each Group will have 10 minutes to present the summary of the deliverables

– The Panelists will ask questions after the presentations to clarify points

CYCLE 4: Hands-On: Develop a Perfect Communication Strategy

After your project was approved for “funding”, you’ll get the opportunity to develop a Communication Strategy to support the project and present it to experienced professionals! This activity will be introduced here and you’ll know what is expected of you and your team for the next week.

Activities:

– How to develop a creative brief

– How to develop a concrete and tailored communications strategy

– Narrow down an audience persona

– How to adjust a campaign to social and cultural context

– Develop key messages for a key audience (goals)

– The importance of Call to Action (CTA)

– How to create specific and realistic goals

– Personalizing your branding

After learning about the third and final exercise of the Group Case Study Challenge in the 3rd week, you and your team will be able to schedule a mentoring session to clear any doubts before the presentations on the weekend!

Activities:

– The group should bring at least 2 concrete questions to discuss with the mentors regarding the deliverables;

– Each group will have access to a mentoring session consisting of 30 to 40 minutes to clarify questions regarding the deliverables of the practical activity.

Now that you have completed your creative brief and presentations, it’s time to present the results with your group! The feedbacks from the panelists will enrich this session to make sure that every team gets the best out of their presentation.

Activities:

– Each Group will have 10 minutes to present the summary of the deliverables -The Panelists will ask questions after the presentations to clarify points.

CYCLE 5: Get Ready for UN Careers and Get a Customized Mentoring Session

To give you a perfect end to this immersive & transformational experience, our experts will talk about the exciting opportunities at the UN System, with practical tips to help you succeed in UN’s selection processes!

– UN Staff Categories, Job Families and Networks

– Selection processes at the UN

– The different UN Recruitment Platforms

Expected Duration: 2 hours and 30 min

Each group will have a customized mentoring session during the week to get career advice and receive tips regarding their CV, highly increasing their chances of succeeding in international development selection processes.

Activities:

– Each group will have access to a mentoring session consisting of 30 to 40 minutes;

– This mentoring session will be scheduled on the basis of a demonstration of interest – participants interested should fill a form later;

– Written feedback will be provided for each participant individually (CV technical review);

– Clarifications and scheduling may be posted on the Telegram/WhatsApp group and email.

Carlos Milani, Ph.D

Carlos Milani has a Ph.D. in Development Studies at the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS/Paris) and has vast experience working as an international civil servant at UNESCO’s Social. He is also an affiliated researcher at the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. His research agenda includes the following themes: international development cooperation; actors and agendas of Brazilian foreign policy; comparative foreign policy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The IDCE is completely virtual. You will only need access to a good internet and a Zoom account to fully participate in all days of the event.

To be able to fully go through with the transformation we intend to provide our attendees, we have developed a 5-week schedule with the needed interval to provide participants with the opportunity to absorb the challenges and experiences present in the event. IDCE experts will employ the active learning method. This means that the activities will require from students strong analytical skills, aiming at the construction of knowledge in an active and collaborative way. The mentors will make sure that the participants work on the main competencies needed for both the event and the development field. Gamefication elements will also be present to stimulate healthy competition between the groups.

No, the main days of the IDCE are Saturday and Sunday. During the weekdays, you will have the opportunity to schedule a mentoring session with our experts to prepare for the activities of the next cycle, but that is totally optional! Don’t worry if you have a busy week – you will be able to fully enjoy the event nonetheless!

The event will be held during the weekends (the duration is around 3 hours each day), leaving you free to dedicate the free time for the completion of the tasks of the event at your own pace and collaboratively with your group. You can expect to completely immerse yourself in a challenging development experience. For that, our experts find it necessary to train intensely for your career as a development professional: a mix of sustained practical immersion, the development of specific competencies, and reflective personal awareness and growth.  Check out our full schedule to learn more!

No, there won’t be any tests or exams. The idea is to provide feedback and suggest improvements throughout the activities of the Group Case Study Challenge. It is worth noting that during the first week of the IDCE, you will be introduced to the Group Case Study Challenge, where you will learn about all of the deliverables for each stage of the event and their deadline.
