What is Goal 2 of the SDGs?

The second goal of the SDGs is aimed at ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition and, finally, promoting sustainable agriculture. The second SDG focuses on a comprehensive understanding of the food and agriculture sector for current and future generations.

Many of the targets established in the second goal are scientifically focused but require legal and regulatory review to ensure that land rights without discrimination based on gender or other status exist and are actualized.

What is the importance of the hunger SDG?

More than 790 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. If current trends keep going, the zero hunger target will be largely missed by 2030. The persistence of hunger isn’t merely a matter of food availability. Rather, in many countries, natural and human-induced disasters or political instability have resulted in food insecurity affecting large portions of the population.

Hence, the second goal is crucial to change this tendency, directing the world towards policies that are in line with the goal and are able to secure the necessary amount of food that the population needs.

What types of policies are in line with the hunger Goal?

Policy-makers need to ensure that trade, and policies affecting trade and markets, are taken into consideration as part of their efforts to achieve SDG 2. The five targets that comprise SDG 2 (ending hunger; ending all forms of malnutrition; doubling the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers; ensuring sustainable food production systems; and maintaining genetic diversity), often constitute distinct policy priorities for governments.

It is important that policy-makers identify and recognize areas in which difficult tradeoffs may be needed between competing policy objectives, and identify possible ways in which these can be addressed, hence defining policies in line with Goal 2 that are not only viable but effective in their objective.
