What is Goal 7 of the SDGs?
The seventh goal of the SDGs is aimed at ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for everyone. This goal bridges between the three pillars of sustainable development by recognizing energy as having a human rights component, especially in terms of access, an environmental component, particularly in the renewable energy sector, and an economic component, notably in the promotion of clean and renewable energy markets at national and international levels.
For the purpose of achieving this goal, doubling the global rate of energy efficiency improvements is crucial, as well as substantially increasing the percentage of renewables in the energy mix.
What is the importance of the sustainable energy SDG?
Over 10 % of the world’s population live without electricity and a further billion are connected to unreliable and unstable power networks. Today, almost 3 billion people in Asia and the Southern Sahara still use polluting fuels for cooking (wood, charcoal, dung or soft coal). This represents 40 % of the population of the world.
This lack of access to reliable and sustainable energy creates serious problems both for human beings and for the environment. The UN reckons that four million premature deaths result as a consequence of air pollution derived from the burning of biomass for cooking and heating. The UN also claims that energy use constitutes 60 % of total global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), the main factor leading to climate change.
What types of policies are in line with the sustainable energy Goal?
The types of policies that are in line with the Sustainable Energy Goal are:
- Policies aimed at ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services;
- Policies aimed at increasing substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix;
- Policies aimed at doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency;
- Policies aimed at enhancing international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil-fuel technology, and promote investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology.
