What is Goal 12 of the SDGs?

The twelfth goal of the SDGs is aimed at ensuring responsible and efficient consumption of resources and sustainable means of production. This includes an emphasis on economic practices, as well as more subtle attention placed on environmental and human rights practices.

What is the importance of the responsible consumption and production SDG?

The fact that progress has been typically followed by environmental degradation is endangering the planet’s survival. Global consumption and production depend on the use of natural resources, which means that these need to be used in a more efficient way.

One-third of all food produced in the world ends up as waste; the food industry consumes around 30% of the planet’s energy and is responsible for 22% of greenhouse gas emissions; even with more recent technological advances, energy use in OECD countries continues to grow. All of this paints a dreadful picture: three planets will be needed to provide the natural resources necessary to maintain today’s lifestyles in 2050.

That is why responsible consumption and production are important and the promotion of global and urgent action to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns is of the SDGs.

What types of policies are in line with Goal 12?

The types of policies that are in line with the consumption and production SDG are:

  • Policies aimed at achieving the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources;
  • Policies aimed at halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses;
  • Policies aimed at achieving the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reducing their release to air, water and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment;
  • Policies aimed at substantially reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
