What is Goal 14 of the SDGs?
The fourteenth goal of the SDGs is aimed at conserving and using the oceans, seas and marine resources in a sustainable way. It seeks to prevent and reduce marine pollution of all types, to minimize and address the effects of ocean acidification, as well as to regulate fisheries and other subsidiaries objectives.
What is the importance of the life below water SDG?
Rain, drinking water, the climate, coasts, and even the oxygen present in the air all fundamentally come from the sea and are reliant upon it. The oceans also provide vital natural resources, such as biofuels, food, and medicine.
Notwithstanding the central importance of the seas, irresponsible exploitation over the years has led to a worrying level of degradation. The present efforts to protect ocean environments and small-scale fisheries are only a band-aid solution to the problems of today.
What types of policies are in line with Goal 14?
The types of policies that are in line with the life below water SDG are:
- Policies aimed at preventing and significantly reducing marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution;
- Policies aimed at sustainably managing and protecting marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and taking action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans;
- Policies aimed at minimizing and addressing the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels;
- Policies aimed at effectively regulating harvesting and ending overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices.
