What is Goal 6 of the SDGs?
The sixth goal of the SDGs is aimed at ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all people. There is an urgent need to work towards rational and sustainable use of this essential resource and tackle the risks related to its scarcity.
For the purpose of achieving this goal, measures such as universal and equitable access to affordable drinking water by 2030 are considered, reducing pollution and waste to improve water quality and minimizing the emission of chemicals, as well as reducing the percentage of untreated wastewater.
What is the importance of the clean water SDG?
Around 2.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water and 4.2 billion do not have safely managed sanitation services. One in 10 people worldwide (about 785 million) do not have basic services, including 144 million who drink untreated surface water.
The availability of fresh water in sufficient proportions of quality and quantity is fundamental to any aspect of life and sustainable development. Water resources are integrated into all types of development, into the maintenance of economic growth in agriculture, industry, and energy generation, as well as into the conservation of healthy ecosystems.
What types of policies are in line with the clean water Goal?
The types of policies that are in line with the Clean Water Goal are:
- Policies aimed at achieving access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations;
- Policies aimed at improving water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally;
- Policies aimed at substantially increasing water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity;
- Policies aimed at implementing integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate.
