IMF Grade Structure and Types of Appointment

The IMF has a defined hierarchical grade structure that encompasses administrative and operational support roles, and senior-level leadership positions.

The initial letters A or B indicate the specific job category, and the numbers indicate the positions that the staff member occupies within the hierarchy. The table below illustrates this structure:

IMF – Grade Levels

A1 – A8Support Staff: are staff members who work to support the operational areas, providing support to people involved in the organization`s main activities.
A9 – A15Professional Staff: are professionals who provide leadership and strategic advice, and coordinate the organization. In addition, they are responsible for planning, negotiating, problem solving, evaluating and preventing risks, and/or the operational supervision of Resources.
B01-B05Managerial Staff: are professionals who perform executive, senior management or administrative roles, which includes department managers, heads of administrative units, assistant directors, and other people who perform similar roles, designated a top level management team by a board.

Types of Appointment

Staff appointments at the IMF are usually for an initial period of up to three years. Staff members may receive an extension to this term, or become established in a regular position (such as appointment for an unlimited period).

This is subject to employee performance, which indicates the potential for a successful career at the IMF, depending on the combination between the Fund`s needs and opportunities.

IMF contract positions may vary in duration from the initial appointment, but may be extended in accordance with the organization`s needs by up to a cumulative maximum of four years.

Eligibility for certain contract benefits may vary according to the length of service, and type of position.
