IOM overview

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organization that is dedicated to ensuring that global migration flows happen in an orderly fashion, respecting the principle of human dignity. Headquartered in Le Grand-Saconnex (Switzerland), IOM has 169 member states, with offices in more than 100 countries around the globe. The agency sees migration as an opportunity to stimulate economic, social and cultural development and defends the rights of all people to freedom of movement. Therefore, IOM operates in partnership with governments and other civil society institutions, promoting: i) technical expertise for the peaceful and humane resolution of problems regarding migration; ii) carrying out research; and iii) providing humanitarian help to migrants, including refugees.

IOM’s main focus: Promoting the extension of protection to migrants in a global scale.

IOM Jobs - Selection Processes

In order to start a career with the IOM, applicants must know what are the existing recruiting initiatives, their eligibility criteria and different stages of the selection processes, as well as have a broad understanding of the culture and values of this complex international organization.

For positions of one year at the IMO, which are subject to a vacancy announcement (VN), the selection process can take from 2 to 4 months. The process comprises of:

  • Publication of vacancy (3 to 4 weeks)
  • Applicants’ screening
  • Shortlisting and interviews
  • Selection recommendation
  • Review at the Appointment and Posting Board
  • Appointment

For positions of 3 to 9 months at the IMO, which are subject to short-term vacancy announcements (SVN), the selection process can take from 2 to 4 weeks. The process comprises of:

  • Publication of vacancy (2 to 3 weeks)
  • Applicants’ screening
  • Shortlisting and interviews
  • Selection recommendation
  • Review at the Appointment and Posting Board
  • Appointment

It should be noted that the IMO also espouses an internship program and opportunities for junior professional officers (JPOs).

IOM Jobs - General Requirements

Before applying for a vacancy at an organization, it is important to understand which staff profile it employs and looks for in its selection processes. This will help you to: understand if your professional profile fits with what the organization is looking for; to get ready, in order to have greater chances of success in future selection processes, and to prepare better curriculum and application documents required for your application.

Minimum requirements in all categories of job posts for the IOM include:

  • Being between 21 and 62 years old
  • Being fluent knowledge of English and/or French or Spanish

In the Professional category, the minimum requirements are:

  • Being a national from an IOM Member State
  • Being a holder of an advanced university qualification from an accredited University/College
  • Having at least 3 years of professional experience in your respective fields of expertise, or several years of experience for senior-level positions
  • Be willing to be assigned to IOM duty stations in the field

In the General Service category, the minimum requirements are:

  • Being a holder of at least a secondary school diploma or equivalent, and/or relevant technical qualification
  • Having advanced knowledge of Word for Windows and Excel software or analogous software

IOM Jobs - Interview

After shortlisting candidates from the application’s pool, IOM will invite selected applicants for the assessment phase, which will be comprised of a competency-based interview, a reference check and other processes depending on the position level, area of work, and office context.

The competency-based interview is composed of questions aimed to identify, in the candidate, specific behavioral competencies associated with a work position.
