What is Goal 13 of the SDGs?
The thirteenth goal of the SDGs is aimed at adopting urgent measures to stop climate change, which is affecting every nation of the world. This SDG involves a sophisticated understanding of climate change and related issues as a set of topics that relate to the environment as well as economics and human rights.
What is the importance of the climate action SDG?
Greenhouse gas (GG) levels in the atmosphere have been rising gradually since the Industrial Revolution; the sea level rose by 19 centimeters between 1901 and 2010; the Arctic is losing 1.07 million km2 of ice every decade.
All this suggests that the Earth’s weather patterns are changing and human activity is the main responsible for that. Climate change has a very negative impact on the environment, the economy, human societies and communities and, if fast action is not taken, the consequences will be devastating for life and for the development of the planet.
What types of policies are in line with Goal 10?
The types of policies that are in line with the climate action SDG are:
- Policies aimed at strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries;
- Policies aimed at integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning;
- Policies aimed at improving education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning;
- Policies aimed at implementing the commitment undertaken by developed-country parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
