What is Goal 16 of the SDGs?
The sixteenth goal of the SDGs is aimed at promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies, ensuring access to justice and building efficient and responsible institutions.
To achieve this, it is fundamental to reduce all forms of violence and mortality rates around the globe; put an end to ill-treatment, exploitation and human trafficking, and the torture of children; promote the rule of law, and guarantee access to equal justice for all.
What is the importance of the peace, justice and strong institutions SDG?
Part of the sustainable development agenda is framed by achieving peace, human rights and effective governability. Some regions enjoy permanent levels of peace and security; others, conversely, go through cycles of conflict and violence. The world is divided and trying to find peace and fraternity is a requisite of a more just world.
Unstable institutions, insecurity, and conflict are continuing to threaten sustainable development. According to the UN Sustainable Development Goals Report (2020), one in four children has no legal identity through not having their birth registered, which makes fighting for their rights difficult. Hence, the peace, justice and strong institutions SDG is vital for all other SDGs.
What types of policies are in line with Goal 16?
The types of policies that are in line with the peace, justice and strong institutions SDG are:
- Policies aimed at ensuring the reduction of all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere;
- Policies aimed at ending abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children;
- Policies aimed at promoting the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensuring equal access to justice for all;
- Policies aimed at significantly reducing illicit financial and arms flows, strengthening the recovery and return of stolen assets and combating all forms of organized crime.
