One of the concerns for WB YPP candidates is reconciling family and professional commitments. To be more specific, candidates often have questions regarding the World Bank’s parental leave policy.
There are three types of parental leave at the World Bank: maternity leave, paternity leave and adoption leave:
- The Bank provides paid maternity leave for every World Bank employee independent of when she was employed. In other words, the employee has the right to this benefit independent of the amount of time she has worked for the Bank. The leave is for 70 working days (approximately three months) for each birth. It should be noted that if the employee resigns from the Bank before she has completed two full years of service, she must proportionally reimburse the institution for her maternity leave.
- The Bank provides paid paternity leave for every World Bank employee independent of when he was employed. The leave is for 10 working days (two weeks) for each birth.
- The Bank also offers adoption leave when a member of staff adopts a child up to the age of 12. In this case, the main care provider (either man or woman) has the right to 70 working days’ (approximately three months) leave for each adoption. It should be noted that if the employee is the main care provider for the child and resigns from the Bank before completing two full years of service, s/he must proportionally reimburse the institution for their adoption leave. An employee who adopts a child but is not the main care provider also has the right to adoption leave, which in this case is ten working days.
