UNAIDS Overview

The United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) was created in 1996 with the mission of fighting against AIDS around the world. For that purpose, it has provided treatment and assistance to HIV Carriers and sought ways to reduce the socio-economic impacts of the virus proliferation. Headquartered in Geneva (Switzerland), the program manages to integrate a network of actors (government, companies and civil society) so they act conjointly, searching for solutions to enable accessible and effective policies to all in fight against HIV. For that reason, UNAIDS has helped to expand the reach of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

UNAIDS‘ main focus: Fighting and preventing contamination by HIV throughout the world.

UNAIDS Jobs - General Requirements

Education

In terms of education, we exemplify UNAIDS’ common requirements with a vacancy for UNAIDS Country Director in Mozambique. Note that this will vary from vacancy to vacancy:

  • Advanced university degree at the Masters’s level or equivalent in Public Health, Medicine, Economics, Social or Political Sciences or related field. For internal candidates, a first university degree and 12 years of experience will be considered as equivalent.

Professional experience

In terms of professional experience, we exemplify UNAIDS’ common requirements with a vacancy for UNAIDS Country Director in Mozambique. Note that this will vary from vacancy to vacancy:

Essential: A minimum of 10 years of experience in policy, planning, managing and implementing development of cooperation programmes on public health and HIV, and/or economic, corporate and sustainable development or closely related areas, at international and national levels.

Desirable: 5 years or more relevant international working experience in developing and/or middle-income countries, and knowledge of country context; Experience of working with UN system organizations in public health or other development cooperation programmes. Experience in working with civil society and resource mobilization.

Languages

Generally, advanced knowledge of English or French (these are the working languages of the organization) is required. Good knowledge of the other language is considered an asset. Knowledge of one of the official languages of UNAIDS (Arabic, Chinese, Spanish or Russian) is considered as an additional asset.

UNAIDS Jobs - Interview

After applicants pass the screening phase of UNAIDS’ selection process, they will then be contacted to take part in either an assessment or interview or both to determine the right candidate for the job.

To exemplify UNAIDS’ interview mechanisms, we have used the UNAIDS’ internships interview stage below. Note that other opportunities at the UNAIDS may vary slightly from this in terms of how the interview is conducted.

How is the UNAIDS Internship Program interview?

Usually, only selected applicants will be contacted for the interview, which lasts about 30 minutes and may be done via Skype or phone. The interview consists mainly of objective questions about themes of International Relations and Global Health.

UNAIDS Jobs - Salary and Benefits

These are the salary and benefits offered by UNAIDS to staff members recruited on a fixed-term appointment or on a temporary appointment:

Remuneration

Staff members in the Professional and Higher Categories are paid on the basis of salary scales applied worldwide and established by the General Assembly of the United Nations on the recommendation of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC).

Staff members in the General Service (GS) and National Professional Officers (NO) Categories are paid according to a local salary scale. Salary scales are reviewed periodically on the basis of comprehensive surveys of the best prevailing conditions of employment in the locality.

Pension Fund

Staff members appointed initially for six months or more become full participants in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF), which also provides disability and survivor benefits as a result of accident or illness.

Staff Health Insurance

The Staff Health Insurance provides for the reimbursement of 80% of the major portion of recognized medical expenses. Staff members participate in the WHO Staff Health Insurance as a condition of their employment. Participation is also mandatory for their dependants who are recognized by UNAIDS.
