What is Goal 1 of the SDGs?

The first Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is aimed at ending poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Amongst its objectives are ensuring that the whole population and mainly the poorest and most vulnerable have equal rights to economic resources, access to basic services, property and land control, natural resources and new technologies.

What is the importance of the reduction of poverty SDG?

More than 700 million people still live in extreme poverty and are struggling to fulfill the most basic needs like health, education, and access to water and sanitation. The overwhelming majority of people living on less than $1.90 a day live in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and they account for 70% of the global total of extremely poor people.

As human beings, our well-being is linked to each other. Growing inequality is detrimental to economic growth and undermines social cohesion, increasing political and social tensions and even driving instability and conflicts.

What types of policies are in line with the reduction of poverty Goal?

Amongst the policies in line with the Reduction of Poverty SDG are:

  • Reducing at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions;
  • Implementing nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and achieving substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable;
  • Ensuring that all men and women have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services;
  • Building the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reducing their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters.
