A Client’s Journey: An interview evaluating OpenIGO’s impact on their career development

April 20, 2024

At OpenIGO, we always seek to provide our products and services to our clients in an engaged and impactful way, aiming to make a difference and help them achieve their dreams.

We had the opportunity to interview one of our clients and share their views about OpenIGO, the products and services from us that they acquired and, above all, how we contributed to their preparation for a competitive selection process.

In this interview, our client, who wishes to remain anonymous, explores the many ways in which OpenIGO has helped them, providing advice from their own perspective to those looking for an international career.

In pursuit of its mission, the OpenIGO network has prepared a comprehensive eBook and support and guidance services with the aim of highly increasing your chances of success in this competitive process.

Our comprehensive eBook will introduce you to the complex world of the World Bank Group and its approach towards international development; it will teach you how to prepare each of the documents required in detail, and will also get you ready for the interview and assessment center.

In addition, we have developed support and guidance services. These services include revising your WBG YPP application documents (essay, curriculum vitae and thesis/dissertation short summaries) and a mock interview as per the World Bank YPP model.

Below are the questions and their respective answers from our client:

  1. What is your academic/professional background?

I have a multidisciplinary academic background that combines History, Economics and Public Policy Analysis. I am currently doing a PhD in Economics and Business Management with major in labor economics. Professionally, I work in the development field, specializing in public financial management, public investments, and data analytics in countries in fragility, conflict and violence.

  1. When did your desire to work with international development start?

When I was very young but the first hand-on experience I had was with 25 years old working with an entrepreneurship project in Mexico.

  1. What was your personal preparation for the WBG YPP selection process?

I followed the complete package that was offered by OpenIGO, from the reading the book to using their services to review the materials that I submitted and training with them for the interviews.

  1. What were the main obstacles you found in your preparation?

I think that there are two major obstacles. The first one is the long time that it takes to prepare all the materials that you have to submit and do it with a very high quality and targeting the roles/position that you can fill into the organization.

There is very little feedback from the WB, so OpenIGO helps you with that.

There is very little feedback from the WB, so OpenIGO helps you with that. This way you can know what you are doing well, you get coaching, and at least even if you do not succeed you learn and you can incorporate the learning for future applications. The second is the references that you need to send. This is something you must prepare in very advance.

  1. How did you come to know OpenIGO Network?

I was looking for information about the World Bank Young Professional Program on tips and guidelines on how to apply, and google show me the website of OpenIGO.

  1. What you can say about your interaction with us?

I do not think I would get so far into the selection process without their support.

It was very good. Honestly, I do not think I would get so far into the selection process without their support. I especially recommend the mock interview service not only for the preparation for the WBG YPP but also because it makes you aware of the strengths and weaknesses that there are in your CV and in the ways, you approach job interviews in general.

  1. How do you think OpenIGO helped you in your preparation to apply for an international selection process?

I have used the same CV format/contents to apply to other jobs later and I got the positions.

They gave me clear and actionable recommendations to improve my CV, essays and other documents that I have to submit for my application.

I must even say that I have used the same CV format/contents to apply to other jobs later and I got the positions. They also helped me to develop my interview skills and to increase my self-confidence.

  1. What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to apply for an Intergovernmental Organization?

This is a long-distance running for which you are preparing at least since University. Start accumulating accomplishments and focus on what field you want to work.

Try to be specific and specialized. Do not underestimate the importance of networking and doing extra-curricular activities like participating in conferences, publishing, volunteering, etc.

Indeed, learning how to apply for jobs, looking for opportunities, selling yourself, and conducting interviews and other selection tests, are important skills you should develop. OpenIGO can definitively help you with that.
