Duties and Responsibilities

1. Interprets oral statements during the requested meetings and events and translate documents as required.

2. Interprets oral conversations, discussions and interviews especially when attending meetings with high-ranking officials, diplomats and other actors.

3. As required, the incumbent will travel with international staff on their missions to the field for interpretation and other assistance.

4. Translate written communications as required.

5. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications and Professional Experience Required

• Qualified and certified Farsi-English interpreter.
• Experience in working with Governments, International Organizations, specially at high level events is desirable.
• University degree in the related field of work is required.
• At least 5 years of experience is essential, previous experience within international organizations and States is a plus.
• Essential: Ability to work withing a multicultural environment.
• Capacity to work independently and ability to solve problems.
• Manage information in a confidential manner.
• Language fluency in English and Farsi essential.

General Background

Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions.

UNHCR’s key governing processes at headquarters level primarily include the Standing Committee meetings and Executive Committee of the High Commissioner’s Programme (ExCom) to provide member States updates on the different protection programmes of the organization. The EXCOM meets in Geneva annually to review and approve the agency’s programmes and budget, advise on international protection and discuss a range of other issues with UNHCR and intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.

Purpose and Scope of Assignment

The primary objective is for the interpreter to provide simultaneous interpretation English/ Farsi and vice versa for delegates from the Islamic Republic of Iran participating during UNHCR’s governing processes such as the Standing Committee Meetings and EXCOM. However, the interpreter will also be required to support related side events and other meetings and reunions, upon previous notice, taking place in Geneva, Switzerland which involve the participation of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Additional support translating short and concise documents could be requested. The interpreter will be required to act in accordance to UNHCR’s code of conduct, including treating the information with confidentiality.
