Mission and objectives

UNICEF has been working for the realization of the rights of children and women of Moldova since 1995. Partnerships with the government, parliamentarians, civil society, media, business and others have resulted in advances in the realization of children’s rights in a number of areas and the increased commitment of duty bearers to the fulfillment of their obligations as per the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). UNICEF’s work addresses issues of all children in the country to improve their health, education, development, and protection.

Context

UNICEF MCO works towards improvement in access to WASH in 125 schools across the country, with a specific focus on rural areas where the most at-risk children reside. The goal is to address the dire situation in these areas. To ensure the sustainability of the infrastructure and to reach the most deprived institutions in the country, the rehabilitation of schools’ infrastructure in targeted municipalities includes the installation of climate-resilient WASH systems.
The selected UN Volunteer is expected to provide knowledge-driven technical and capacity-building support for integrating climate, energy, environment, and disaster risk reduction, with a focus on water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH), in ongoing and newly developed project proposals and interventions.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of WASH Officer (Climate, Energy, Environment, & Disaster Risk Reduction (CEED) Focal Point), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
-Support the WASH team in the identification and documentation of the climate, energy, environment, and disaster risk reduction technical solutions.
-Contribute to the development of a child climate-sensitive concept and technical note for WASH interventions.
-Assist in developing knowledge products to help children understand and address environmental and climate change priorities.
-Support communication and policy advocacy regarding climate change, DRR, resilience building, and child rights, as well as input into key national climate and environment policy dialogues.
-Contribute to reviews of relevant Government and partner policy documents to advance a child-centered CEED agenda and participate in strategic discussions to influence national policies and strategies on climate energy and the environment.
-Support organizing DRR/CC workshops meetings or events such as International Day for Disaster Reduction, World Environment Day, etc. when applicable.
-Support fundraising on climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and climate resilience, in line with UNICEF’s key thematic areas.
