We are looking for a Climate and Environmental Peacemaking Analyst (consultancy contract) to support our programmatic work in Yemen. Reporting to the Climate and Environmental Peacemaking Programme Manager and working closely with the whole project team, the Analyst will conduct desk-based research and data analysis to support the production of several research and analysis outputs as part of the Institute’s Environmental Pathways for Reconciliation in Yemen project. The role also implies writing and editing responsibilities for a variety of formats.​

Project context

EIP’s Climate and Environmental Peacemaking (CEPM) Programme seeks to gear up conflict resolution to respond to climate change and broader environmental challenges in conflict contexts to contribute to a sustainable environment and enhance the prospects for durable peace. We support peace leaders and local communities to address climate and environmental concerns in the broader framework of peace processes, in conflict prevention and resolution.

The Environmental Pathways for Reconciliation (EPfR) project is being implemented by EIP since early 2023. Using environmental issues as entry points and elements of a sustainable peace in Yemen, the EPfR project engages different strata of the Yemeni society to identify and act upon security and conflict risks emerging from the impacts of unsustainable natural resources governance, environmental degradation, and climate change.

You will

Work closely with the project team at EIP, an analyst is required to support the delivery of specific outputs of the Environmental Pathways for Reconciliation in Yemen project, including thematic assessments of the environmental impact of conflict, analysis of environmental consultation data, climate security profiles and communication outputs.

The role of the Analyst will include, but may not be limited to, the following responsibilities:

• Conduct analysis of climate and environmental security risks, including desk-based research and drafting of governorate-level profiles for 13 governorates.
• Conduct a quantitative and qualitative analysis of consultation data, including drafting the updated results report with the project team.
• Assist with desk-based research on thematic assessments of the environmental impact of conflict, and collaborate with the team in writing an assessment report.
• Assist with the conceptualization and creation of a report on environmental peacemaking based on the project community dialogues implemented in Yemen.
• Contribute to Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning of project activities.
• Develop derivative products from the above outputs on the environmental dimension of conflict and peace in Yemen, including articles and stories.
• Participate in regular coordination meetings concerning the abovementioned activities.

The Analyst will further remain available for ad hoc support in response to unexpected needs or requests arising during the implementation of the project, for instance translation or review of documents.

Your skills and experience

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in peace and conflict studies, environmental or climate science, international relations, or another relevant discipline.
• At least 3 years of relevant professional experience working on issues related to natural resources, environment or climate in relation to peace and security.
• Demonstrated analytical and research experience on the environmental dimensions of peace and security, including quantitative and qualitative analysis.
• Geographic information systems and statistical software skills are required, including QGIS, R/STATA and Excel.
• Prior relevant analytical experience in climate-vulnerable and conflict-affected countries is required.
• Knowledge about the political, conflict and environmental context in Yemen is a strong advantage.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is considered a strong asset.
• Excellent research and analytical skills, rigorous and critical mindset. Analytical thinking, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a small team, operate effectively under pressure and comply with deadlines.
• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from different backgrounds and cultures, strong interpersonal skills.
