Mission and objectives
UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. Working closely with local non-governmental organisations, UNICEF Papua New Guinea has strengthened the capacity of the often-remote districts and communities in the areas of health, justice, and access to education. UNICEF also provides direct assistance to the population in some areas, providing drugs, vaccines, and nutritional supplements.
Context
Working alongside the Senior Communication Associate and under the general guidance of the Communication Specialist, the Digital Storyteller will help enhance UNICEF Papua New Guinea’s online presence by creating engaging multimedia content, including written stories, videos, and photos, that highlight UNICEF’s impact and achievements in the country. Savvy with social media, the Digital Storyteller will apply journalism techniques to identify news and current affairs relevant to UNICEF Papua New Guinea’s mission, conduct desktop and field research, and craft narratives that resonate with domestic and international audiences.
Task description
Under the supervision of the Advocacy & Communication Specialist and team leader, the Digital Storyteller will undertake the following tasks:
Content Creation:
• Produce engaging multimedia content, including written stories, videos, and photos, highlighting UNICEF’s initiatives and achievements in Papua New Guinea.
• Conduct interviews with beneficiaries and stakeholders to capture compelling narratives and success stories.
• Document challenges faced by children and communities, showcasing the need for intervention and UNICEF’s response.
Storytelling:
• Conduct interviews, field and desktop research, and craft narratives that resonate with diverse audiences, evoking empathy and understanding from stakeholders including existing and potential donors.
• Highlight the unique experiences of children and families in Papua New Guinea, amplifying their voices and advocating for their rights.
• Showcase both the challenges faced and the innovative solutions UNICEF is implementing to address them and highlight UNICEF’s impact.
Social Media Management:
• Help manage UNICEF Papua New Guinea’s social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn).
• Curate content and schedule posts to maintain an active and vibrant online presence.
• Develop social media strategies to amplify UNICEF’s messages, increase reach and engagement, and foster meaningful connections with stakeholders.
Campaign Support:
• Collaborate with the communications team to develop and execute digital campaigns.
• Contribute expertise in content creation and storytelling to develop campaign materials, including graphics, videos, and written content.
• Assist in planning and coordinating campaign activities, leveraging social media channels and digital platforms to reach target audiences effectively.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day).
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.
• Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers.
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organisations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Required experience
3 years of experience in journalism or equivalent field..
• Proficient in producing engaging multimedia content, including written stories, videos, and photos, to highlight UNICEF’s initiatives and achievements.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct interviews with beneficiaries and stakeholders to cap-ture compelling narratives and success stories.
• Skilled in documenting challenges faced by children and communities, effectively showcasing the need for intervention and UNICEF’s response.
• Experienced in conducting interviews, field and desktop research, and crafting narra-tives that resonate with diverse audiences, evoking empathy and understanding.
• Capable of highlighting the unique experiences of children and families in Papua New Guinea, amplifying their voices, and advocating for their rights.
• Skilled in managing social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn) to maintain an active and vibrant online presence.
• Experienced in curating content and scheduling posts to increase reach and engage-ment, fostering meaningful connections with stakeholders.
• Capable of developing social media strategies to amplify UNICEF’s messages and ef-fectively communicate with target audiences.
• Collaborative approach to developing and executing digital campaigns, contributing expertise in content creation and storytelling.
• Proficient in developing campaign materials, including graphics, videos, and written content, to effectively engage target audiences.
• Experienced in planning and coordinating campaign activities, leveraging social media channels and digital platforms for maximum impact.
• Strong journalism background with a bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent.
• Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated competencies in accountability, adaptability, commitment, communica-tion, creativity, ethics, professionalism, respect for diversity, self-management, and technological awareness.
• Ability to thrive in a multicultural and diverse team environment.
