Job Description

Deputy Global Head of Agri-Food
Duty station: The Hague, Netherlands
Full-time, with flexibility to work 32 to 36 hours a week

SNV is seeking to appoint a Deputy Global Sector Head to ensure the quality of agri-food expertise and to grow and enhance impact on food security and adequate nutrition. The Deputy Global Sector Head is part of the Global Agri Food Team (GATe) and will deliver technical expertise to the agri-food portfolio and support the Global Sector Head in managing GATe.

Who you are
You are an impact-driven leader, with strong technical expertise in the Agri-food sector, pivotal for growth and quality of the Agri-food expertise with and through our programs and projects.

Youadvise on how we can effectively develop, implement and position agri-food relevant expertise in the organisation and in our programs and projects. You are a champion on SNV culture, representing our values and encouraging learning, creativity, and innovation. You are financially sound and an are an experienced project manager. In this role you are representing SNV towards key stakeholders and donors.

As Deputy Sector Head Agri-food:
You are part of the Global Agri-Food Team and work closely with Global technical Advisers (GTAs) and within country sector leadership across our agri-food portfolio in the 22 countries to deliver impact.

You develop and provide technical expertise in one of the three areas: (1) Productive and resilient landscapes, (2) inclusive markets and finance, (3) Healthy diets and sustainable consumption.

You work directly with GTAs, overseeing and monitoring the resource allocation of technical expertise to projects. You make sure systems and procedures are in place allowing high quality TE provision to projects, considering resources available in terms of people and budget.

You will foster learning and innovation using monitoring, evaluation and learning and in enabling collaboration mechanisms beyond project level.

You play an important role to support the Global Sector Head Agri Food in Business Development. You keep the pulse of agri-food sector developments, representing SNV to remain strategically targeted and responsive to potential stakeholder needs.

In your role as Deputy you are expected to represent the Global Sector Head when needed in s; stakeholder management, You might be asked to take on specific general management tasks, pending your experience, such as direct line management of multi country sector managers.

The Deputy Sector Head Agri-food will be responsible for the following tasks:

Technical Expertise provision

  • Provide technical expertise to countries we work in, by supporting the design of projects, developing sound tools and methodologies, fostering communities of practice
  • Put systems in place to oversee resource allocation of GTAs and ensure technical expertise is strategically delivered to the agri-food portfolio.
  • Coordinate on flexible layer of technical expertise provision through the agri-food roster
  • Create mechanism for TE provision between countries
  • Generate analytics for the agri-food portfolio that allow better decision making for technical expertise provision, also for BD purposes

Learning and Community of Practice

  • Drive knowledge flows and development strategies within the Agri-food expertise area and across all SNV expertise areas.
  • Facilitate knowledge building, innovation, and adaptive leadership practices
  • Improve use of MEL insights in our way of working
  • External partnership building with prioritized knowledge institutes, including participation in global events

Leadership Support and Representation

  • Support the GSH with compliance, finance, admin-related tasks, the organisation of GATe and agri-food leadership meetings.
  • Act as the line manager for GTAs and selected Multi Country Project Managers. Handle job descriptions, ToRs, recruitment, and performance appraisals.
  • Prepare annual, mid-year and quarterly reporting cycle on behalf of GATe.
  • Support the global sector head in strategic tasks and represent the head as needed in external and internal positions.

Qualifications

  • Passion for and commitment to SNV’s Mission and Vision.
  • 10+ years of working in Agri-food development cooperation in Africa and/or Asia, especially regarding one of the following areas: sustainable production, resilient landscapes, food security, market-based approaches
  • 5+ years of experience in project management
  • 5+ years of experience in business development
  • Experience in systems transformation, good governance practices and approaches that are responsive to gender considerations, social inclusion, and empowerment principles.
  • Skilled people leader with a track record of providing clear direction and guidance to teams.
  • Ability to foster cooperation and teamwork among diverse team members to achieve project goals.
  • Self-motivated with excellent intercultural leadership, teamwork, coaching, communication, networking, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in communicating effectively, reporting, and delivering presentations in both French and English, the corporate languages of SNV.

Additional Information

  • Contract Type: Full time (40 hours per week), with the flexibility to work 32 to 36 hours
  • Contract Duration: one year, with the intention to extent
  • Expected Start Date: September to mid-October, or earlier when available
  • Duty Station: Preferably The Hague, The Netherlands (negotiable)
  • Travel: Approximately 25%
