Organizational and Country Office Context

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is a ministry of the Society of Jesus, incorporated as an international non-governmental organization with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organization was founded in November 1980 and is now in over 56 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office (IO) in Rome. The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term well-being of refugees and displaced people while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs.
The main services provided are education, reconciliation, livelihood activities, and psychosocial support. In Kenya, JRS has two projects: an urban refugee project in Nairobi focussing on Education and Livelihoods and a field project in Kakuma Refugee Camp focussing on Education, Integrated psychosocial inclusive Education programs in Centres, and Safe Shelters.

Role Context

JRS Kenya is seeking to engage the services of an educational expert to fill the position of Education Officer for the Secondary Education Project in Kakuma Municipality. Reporting to the Education coordinator, the post holder will facilitate and supervise all aspects of the Secondary education projects and ensure access and quality education among learners within the municipality.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Position responsibilities:

  • Oversight of the learning centres, ensuring that the learning environment is conducive for the learners and the academic staff.

  • Collaborate with the project staff and ensure stakeholder accountability by ensuring that project activities are carried out in the most sustainable, effective, and efficient way possible

  • Support the Education Coordinator promptly provide progress reports for internal and external use on a regular basis

  • Ascertain that partners and interested stakeholders at all levels are involved in the project’s activities and that they are carried out in compliance with the authorized work plans.

  • Support the coordinator in gathering of valuable data on a regular basis as a verifiable feedback mechanism to monitor the project success and overall impact.

  • Ensure that scholastic materials and other educational resources are distributed to target schools in an effective and efficient manner.

  • Collaborate with other departments to make sure that operational systems, such as procurement, security, administration, and logistics (transport, warehousing, and asset management), are in place to support field operations.

  • Through community mobilization and the enhancement of training materials and programs, support the Education Coordinator in the creation and execution of a strategy to improve and strengthen the management of school committees, PTAs and student councils

  • Support the coordinator in gathering of valuable data on a regular basis as a verifiable feedback mechanism to monitor the project success and overall impact.

  • Routinely visit the learning centres for monitoring exercises, communicating valuable feedback for the project coordinator and the program teams

  • Ensure that information and data from field-based monitoring are routinely compiled and provided to the MEAL Assistant and the Education Coordinator for reporting and monitoring needs.

  • Work with the MEAL Assistant to collect project data to produce useful information that can be utilized for continuing program decision-making and to record outcomes at the impact level.

  • Through the supervision of the coordinator, establish good working relationship with respective local authorities, implementing partners, school managements and target communities

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with the education team, other colleagues, and stakeholders

    Person Specification – Essential Requirements

Qualification

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in education, Education in Emergencies, special needs education.
  • Must be registered with Teachers Service Commission (TSC)
  • Technical expertise in curriculum implementation
  • Proven academic or on-job training and understanding of the Project Cycle model in managing humanitarian assistance with at least three (3) years in education programming.
  • Experience in coordination of teacher training/capacity building programs
  • Strong analytical, administration and documentation skills in the management of educational institutions or programs consisting of primary education.
  • Good knowledge in project management and reporting writing skills
  • Knowledge of education in emergencies, education sector policy, child rights and protection issues.
  • Experience in facilitating community-based training, capacity building school management, and awareness campaigns

Salary Level

  • This position is graded at job Group 6.
  • KES 141,672 Gross per month consolidated.
