Tetra Tech International Development (International Development Jobs – Tetra Tech), is currently accepting expressions of interest from qualified candidates for a potential Food Security and Climate Change Advisor position for the FEWS NET 8 (Famine Early Warning Systems Network) Decision Support Contract. This position will be based in Arlington, Virginia. Hybrid and remote options are available.

Position Description/Summary: FEWS NET is dedicated to delivering early warning of hazards, food insecurity, vulnerability, and famine to the US Government, USAID, national governments, and various regional, international, and non-governmental organizations. FEWS NET 8 will continue the critical work that FEWS NET has delivered for over 30 years, emphasizing global coverage and innovation in food security monitoring and assessment. Managed from a headquarters office in Washington D.C., FEWS NET 8 will extend its reach beyond traditional geographical limitations, providing decision support services for over 30 presence countries and global early warning of food security and humanitarian crises.

This Food Security and Climate Change Advisor will work with USAID, FEWS NET partners, and other priority stakeholders to assess the impacts of climate change on food-insecure populations and food crises while developing tailored decision-support products that support the full range of planning processes. The individual will marshal resources and expertise, including from within relevant Tetra Tech technical sectors and experts, to stay abreast of and leverage timely and relevant information sources and mechanisms to inform decision-making both within the FEWS NET team and by counterparts in the public, private, and civil society sectors.

Responsibilities:

* Lead analyses to classify and prioritize both opportunities and threats driven by climate change, with an emphasis on adaptation mechanisms, as they relate to food security and early warning processes within FEWS NET geographies;

* Contribute to the development of improved analytical tools that can be used to monitor, assess, and communicate food insecurity information;

* Act as an internal resource and technical expert for colleagues within this technical sub-domain. Develop trainings and briefers or other collateral to support the integration of climate-smart analysis into relevant decision-making processes;

* Upon request, coordinate with external stakeholders in the field, including UN, USG agencies, and host country institutions, which are operating relevant climate change initiatives within food security analyses or mechanisms;

* Conduct applied research resulting in the development of white papers relevant to climate change implications for food security and famine early warning.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

* Master’s degree in international development, agricultural economics, or similar degree with specific expertise in climate change and early warning systems;

* A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience in the field of agricultural development, disaster risk reduction and livelihoods;

* Experience leading and conducting research on famine, food security, and impacts related to climate change;

* Experience designing and implementing programs to respond to food insecurity;

* Familiarity with analytical tools used to determine food security, including household economy models and Integrated Food Security Phase Classification;

* Experience working with USAID strongly preferred;

* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

* Experience working in a multicultural and diverse environment.

* Fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages such as French or Spanish is advantageous.

* Current U.S. work authorization is required at the time of application.
