Geneva Call is a neutral and impartial non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting respect for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence. Role
Geneva Call is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to serve as the Grants Coordinator for the Afghanistan Country Program. The Grants Coordinator will play a critical role in coordinating/leading grants management and strategic positioning with donors and partners. The role will also support in securing funding for programs by managing grant processes, supporting proposal development, ensuring compliance, reporting, and potentially training in-country staff.
Core responsibilities
Grants Management and Coordination
- Based on the tracking provided by the donor relations, review, and position for opportunities that will drive Geneva Call Afghanistan – actively research and identify grant opportunities that align with the GC’s mission, programs, and areas of expertise. This involves staying up-to-date on funding trends, donor priorities, and deadlines.
- In consultation with the Country Director and members, ensure technical engagement with donors to pre-position and prepare for opportunities, and engage in strategic positioning work directly as appropriate.
- Engaging with technical experts at Regional and HQ as needed to ensure high-quality, evidence-based grants design that draw on needs assessments and learning from past programs – and lead on the grants writing processes.
- Ensuring partners are identified and appropriately engaged in program design, especially to strengthen the protection of civilians and gender sensitivity at the design stage.
- Ensuring that grants/projects and their budgets include robust MEAL plans that are aligned with the Global Results Framework introduced by key donors (and therefore advance towards our Breakthroughs), incorporate Common Approaches as relevant, and build in critical learning questions.
- Ensuring the project budget will enable the project to be delivered as designed.
- Gather information on project progress, finances, and impact.
- Craft clear, concise reports that showcase the impact of funded projects, highlighting how donor contributions made a difference.
- Ensure timely submission of reports that meet all funder requirements – programs comply with donor guidelines and internal regulations.
Strategic Partnerships
- Support CD/Advance and cultivate strategic alliances with local and international civil society organizations, NGOs, UN Agencies, and relevant authorities to promote the national and global strategy aimed at ensuring the protection of civilians and strengthening the Geneva Call program.
- Provide technical assistance and capacity-building in grants management to implementing/strategic partners, tailoring these efforts to the specific needs and context.
External Representation and Accountability
- Represents Geneva Call at program, advocacy, and coordination events/meetings with the international community and other forums in coordination with the HoP and Country director.
- Demonstrates accountability in decision-making, resource allocation, and the embodiment of Geneva Call values and principles.
People Management
- Provides leadership and technical and administrative supervision to reporting officer/consultant.
- Supports HR with recruitment, training, development performance appraisal of direct reports.
- Capacity building:Train staff on grant writing and reporting.
Safety and Security
- In close coordination with the Safety and Security Coordinator and Country Director, ensure that staff safety regulations are respected across the program Team.
Additional duties
- Contribute to opening new bases when required.
- Additional tasks when required.
Main qualifications
Education and experience
- Master’s degree in international relations, development, humanitarian studies, Management Science, or related field.
- 5 – 7 years of experience in grants/program management in international humanitarian or development organizations.
Languages
- Excellent English is required.
- Excellent writing/drafting skills.
Main qualifications, experiences, and skills
- Demonstrating integrity: upholding and promoting the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct with GC’s values.
- Experience in working in complex security environments.
- Understanding of advocacy, policy, and government systems in the host country.
- Credibility to lobby, influence, and represent Geneva Call.
- Proven track record of grants management for multiple donors including FCDO, EU, ECHO etc.
- Strong understanding of protection issues in Afghanistan and the context of armed conflict.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse team and manage relationships with stakeholders.
- Approachable, good listener, easy to talk to.
- Builds and maintains effective relationships with colleagues, members, external partners, and supporters.
- Values diversity and different people’s perspectives, able to work cross-culturally.
- People management experience.
- Willingness and ability to travel at short notice.
