Summary:
MI Americas is Malteser International’s U.S. affiliate, an independent 501c3 organization based in New York City. The Head of Programs will be charged with leading and strategically developing humanitarian and development-oriented programs in the Americas, in overseeing the program team, and working closely with the program operations and development/fundraising teams. The Head of Programs will focus on oversight of US-government-funded programs and their quality. MI Americas is looking for an experienced professional with international program and leadership experience to support further development of the Americas program with a stronger focus on obtaining US government and US Foundation grants, also for worldwide funding. This is a role for someone dynamic with a drive for high-quality results who identifies with the values and visions of MI.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Portfolio Management and Oversight
- Overall oversight, quality assurance, and strategic development of the Americas portfolio, with a particular focus on USG grants
- Ensure effective management of awards within the assigned portfolio
- Provide input to the strategic and operational plans for these awards
- Identify issues and support team members to develop plans for course correction, and/or escalation, when necessary
- Oversee the start-up, implementation, and close-out of the portfolio of assigned awards
- Closely collaborate with the operations team supporting Country Office management of awards as well as compliance and communication with donors
- Lead on the full life cycle of programs/funds for one assigned response, ensuring adherence to donor rules and regulations and supporting Country Offices to meet key deliverables.
- Travel to MI country offices to conduct reviews, provide operations support, and build Country Office capacity on donor requirements
- Ensure effective risk management in regional portfolio in close collaboration with Global Advisors on Safety and Security, Compliance, and Integrity Management
- Support monitoring of the regional budget and ensuring the proper use of funds
- Representation of MI externally and maintenance of contact with donors, networks, and organizations in the US and region
- Support the acquisition of public and private funding to support the programs. Strategically plan and implement a shift from current German and EU funding to stronger US funding, also for worldwide funding opportunities.
Management Support
- Supervise and develop assigned program managers in HQ and program coordinators at country offices, embracing diversity
- For direct reports, oversee orientation, development of individual and teamwork plans, performance evaluations
- Serve as backstop and support for team members in the implementation of portfolio
- Foster a collegial environment that promotes knowledge sharing, respectful engagement, and models joint collaboration
- Represent MI Americas programs towards US and regional donors, foundations, major donors, and at fundraising events
Skills and Experience
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 5 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated field-level experience in chronic or acute humanitarian crises
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with and raising funds from international donors; in particular excellent knowledge of the US funding landscape, including PRM, USAID, BHA, and US Foundations with a successful track record in acquiring grants
- Excellent grant writing skills
- Proven success working across the full cycle of project/award management and implementation
- Demonstrated ability to manage a team, with interest and ability to recruit, support, retain and develop staff
- Proven analytical, organization, communication, and management skills; must have attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and ability to make independent decisions.
- Ability to lead portfolio review and analysis processes to ensure oversight and management of risk for awards in portfolio
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and in a culturally sensitive manner with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
- Professional proficiency in spoken and written English and Spanish; French would be an asset
- High level of identification with the mission and vision of MI as a catholic organization
- Ability to travel as required to support humanitarian responses, country office support, and external representation
