Job Synopsis: The Appalachia Build Hospitality Manager provides overall responsibility for hosting volunteers and guests. The Hospitality Manager plans menus and oversees meal preparation and ensures the facility is clean, stocked, and maintained. The duties include supervising a team of some staff and some volunteers to help with cleaning, cooking, and other responsibilities. The Hospitality Manager also coordinates occasional educational opportunities.
MCC’s Appalachia Build program provides week-long service opportunities for young people and adults and longer-term job opportunities. The primary focus is housing repair for low-income individuals and families.

Essential:
•High school diploma or equivalent
•Minimum 2-3 years of prior experience in hospitality management, food/meal preparation or similar area.
•Understanding of hospitality procedures and best practices
•Intercultural competency to work with volunteers and staff of varying ages and backgrounds
•Sensitivity to and basic understanding of poverty issues in Appalachia
•Capacity to plan out and prepare meals for large groups with varying dietary needs
•Strong administrative skills related to scheduling and delegating tasks as well as arranging educational engagements
•A valid U.S. driver’s license
•Positive cooperative leadership & team-building skills
•Self-motivated
•Flexible and adaptable to changing situations
•Good interpersonal skills
•Computer skills

Employment eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. MCC offers of employment are subject to a successful criminal background check(s).

Preferred:
• Dietary Allergen certification.
• Safe-Serve Certification
•Work and/or living experience in rural cross-cultural setting
•Prior experience in coordinating groups
•Bookkeeping experience

Specific Tasks and Duties:
Hospitality Management 60%
•Coordinate all volunteer groups for Kimball providing communication, logistics, and support before and during service week.
•Supervise all volunteers and staff to help with food preparation/service and facility cleaning duties. Supervisory tasks include but are not limited to: hire and onboard staff, orient and train new staff and volunteers, manage schedules for staff and volunteers, assign tasks, oversee and provide instructions to complete tasks, and approve staff timesheets.
•Orient and providing training for new staff and volunteers including specific safety training.
•Greet guests in a friendly manner.
•Lead regular team meetings.
•Report maintenance deficiencies and items in need of repair.
•Stock and maintain supply rooms.
•Perform deep cleaning tasks and special projects.
•Determining how allocated budget is used related to facility management in consultation with Appalachia Program Director.
•Coordinates the sale of Appalachia Build merchandise.
•Ensure all records are kept properly and consistently

Cleaning and Cooking 30%
•Plan balanced, nutritional meals for groups within provided budgetary guidelines and dietary restrictions.
•Complete primary food preparation in advance of volunteer assistance.
•Clean-up duties including, but not limited to, dusting and polishing furniture and fixtures, vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, shampooing carpets, washing windows, cleaning/waxing floors, removing and disposing of trash and emptying ashtrays.
•Ensure cleaning of designated areas including, but not limited to, restrooms, public areas, offices and banquet/meeting/conference rooms.

General Duties (10%)
•Lead educational opportunities on the Appalachia community and devotions. Arrange guest speakers, activities, and events to help visitors learn about the local culture.
•Meet with Program director and other staff throughout the year.
•Respond to work-related phone calls and emails.
•Attend and support all MCC Great Lakes meetings, gatherings and retreats as required

Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis

Supervision: Direct supervision of summer staff (4-6 people). Indirect supervisory responsibilities of volunteers and volunteer groups.

Travel expectations: Travel up to 5% within the U.S. or Canada
