Organisational context

UNHCR’s Partnership and Coordination Service (PCS) is responsible for ensuring UNHCR approaches partnerships in a strategic and coherent manner. The Services provides support at global level as well as to regional and country offices on relationships with UN agencies, NGOs, advocacy partners and others and ensure UNHCR exercises effective field leadership and coordination. Located in Geneva, PCS comprises of the Inter-Agency and Coordination Section (IACS), the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and Civil Society Section, and the Sports Section.
PCS’ NGO and Civil Society Section leads the global level engagement of UNHCR with NGOs. It is responsible for the organization of online Consultations with NGOs and ad-hoc meetings on specific issues and processes to facilitate NGO’s inputs and contributions to UNHCR policies and processes. The Section also organizes Global Consultations with NGOs and supports UNHCR Regional Bureaus in organizing Regional NGO Consultations.
PCS’ NGO and Civil Society Section also engage in the strengthening and development of new partnerships with NGOs and NGO consortia, but also other actors from the civil society such as organizations and coalitions led by displaced and stateless persons, faith-based organizations (FBOs), and arts organizations.

The position

The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Inter-Agency Coordination Officer (NGOs & Civil Society), NGO Section, Partnership and Coordination Service (Division of External Relations).

The incumbent’s tasks shall include:

• Undertake background research on NGOs, preparing and update NGO factsheets, including and updating funding data.
• Update and develop data systems and PowerBI reports.
• Draft and provide support with notes, meeting minutes, reports, talking points and correspondence.
• Provide support with design and layout of presentations, reports, publications and visuals for social media and events.
• Support the organization of meetings with NGOs (i.e., NGO Global consultations, online consultations with NGOs):
o involvement in the preparation phase sending invitations, collecting registrations, liaising with participants.
o Involvement during the event: delivering badges, providing technical support.
o Be an active team member in the follow up phase of the events: preparing participation statistics, provide support on following up on action points.
• Support with updating content on the website, Intranet, and Community of Practice.
• Provide any other support to the team as required.
Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Recent graduate (persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current students enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO.
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
Please note that candidates who have immediate relatives (father, mother, son, daughter, brother, or sister) working as staff members of UNHCR are not eligible.

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Political Science, International Affairs, International Development, Data Science, Communication or any other relevant field;
• Interest in forced displacement and statelessness issues.
• Fluency and ability to work in English.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Research, data analysis, data visualization and information management skills.
• Very good knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point.
• Flexibility, teamwork skills, professional and personal integrity.

Desirable skills:
• Knowledge of French and/or any other UN languages.
• Experience in preparing communication materials.
• Knowledge of InDesign or other graphics design software.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Salesforce and online meeting hosting platforms (WebEx, Zoom, etc).

What the intern will learn

• Understanding of the UN systems and UNHCR’s mandate.
• Overview of the NGO and civil society landscape and UNHCR’s relationships with NGOs.
• Exposure to wide range of refugee, forced displacement and stateless issues.
• Internal processes and inter-divisional collaboration in a large humanitarian organization.
• Inter-agency and cross-sectoral collaboration in a humanitarian context.
• Working in a multicultural and multilingual team.

Conditions

• The internship is full time (40 hours per week) Monday to Friday, from 09.00-17.00 (CET).
• The intern will report to the Senior Inter-Agency Coordination Officer and will be guided by the External Relations Associate.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses. The amount of the allowance is equivalent to 3,500 USD.
