Purpose of the Role
The International Communications Coordinator is responsible for strategy design and implementation within an engagement framework and in line with global, campaign and organisational engagement strategies. The coordinator acts as a bridge between Greenpeace Africa (GPAF) core teams, advising on strategy and coordinating with relevant National and Regional Offices (NROs), on outputs and materials.
Main duties
Strategy development
- Work with the Director of Communication in development of the GPAF communication strategy.
- Contribute to the development of an overarching communications strategy for GPAF.
- Coordinate release strategies, production and sign-off on all communication with relevant NROs.
- Guide and enable the various cluster communications teams.
- Ensure the global communications vision is translated in the African context.
- Coordinate discussions, encouraging collaboration with partners.
Strategic Communications Input
- Co-develop the release strategy for key campaign outputs in close collaboration with the core team.
- Frequently explore the potential of an application for a Greenpeace global spotlight.
- Provide communications support to major global campaigns.
Implementation
- Plan, design, implement and monitor a comprehensive communication strategy for GPAF.
- Coordinate and execute cohesive, creative and effective communications strategies.
- Identify opportunities for proactive and reactive media work.
- Build and maintain relationships with traditional and new media. Maintain a media contact database.
- Work with agencies, designers and vendors to produce content, creative tools and databases for effective communications.
Internal leadership
- Build capacities through training on strategic communications and running successful communications campaigns.
- Act as liaison within communications, fostering and collaborating with communications specialists to devise cohesive strategies, plans and campaigns.
Budgeting
- Contribute to budget forecast and expenses follow-up with the Project Leader.
- Ensure materials are developed on time & on budget (e.g. reports, IPRs, Q&As, briefings etc.).
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Carry out proper evaluation of communications impact.
- Input is provided to the campaign team on the effectiveness of past communications.
- Expert advice on ways to improve campaign communications in the future is shared with the campaign team.
- Responsible for recurrent and adhoc reporting to other GPAF functions / departments
Content development and editing
- Regularly provide content for the digital team and provide editorial support in digital content creation.
- Provide input from the global campaign context to GPAF publications.
- Provide editorial support in the publication of any office.
Engagement integration
- Encourage functional integration among Greenpeace International (GPI), GPAF and other key National Regional Offices (NROs)
Qualifications and Experience
- Post graduate qualifications in communications, media studies, journalism, or related areas.
- At least 7 years’ experience in media, development journalism, communication, and strong experience in all aspects of communications and lobbying.
- Experience in project management
- Fluency in French and English languages both in writing and speaking
- Experience in working with complex teams and dealing with diversity
