OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The mission of WHO’s UHC/Healthier Populations Division is to contribute to reducing health inequalities and reducing preventable disease and injury caused by environmental, social and economic determinants of health. This is achieved through a coordinated inter-sectoral approach aimed at enabling all people to enjoy better health and well-being, in line with the Organization’s 13th General Programme of Work (GPW13) and the Sustainable Development Goals. Within the Division, the Department of Health Promotion (HPR) works to reduce risks associated with tobacco use, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity, thereby contributing to better population health, through cross-cutting normative, fiscal and legal measures to enhance wellbeing, health literacy and engage multi stakeholders through settings approach and community engagement strategies. Within the HPR Department, the Unit of No Tobacco (TFI) provides global scientific and technical leadership and specialized technical assistance in matters related to implementation of MPOWER technical package in tobacco control and tobacco product regulation. In addition, TFI develops new Global Public Health Goods such as the Global Report on the Tobacco Epidemic, the WHO Technical Report Series on product regulation and Technical Standards for measuring the contents and emissions of nicotine and tobacco products.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Terms of reference

The intern will support the Scientist on tobacco control activities, with a focus on product regulation. Under this supervision, the intern is assigned the agreed terms of reference:
  • Conduct desk-based review on product regulation related topics as guided by the Scientist;
  • Write technical papers and reports on pertinent topics related to the regulation of nicotine and tobacco products;
  • Provide technical support for webinars and workshops on product regulation;
  • Provide technical inputs to build capacity for strengthening implementation of Articles 9 and 10 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control;
  • Compile technical reports for publication;
  • Assist in work on communication, including risk communication and development of factsheets.

Learning objectives

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. The Learning Objectives outlined within each internship vacancy are a key component of the programme.
Within this internship, the intern will:
  • Understand the objectives of the programme/area of work
  • Acquire knowledge on tobacco control and understand its importance and relevance
  • Learn how to translate science to policy to support country work
  • Enhance writing skills to inform policy development
  • Understand the role of product regulation in tobacco control
  • Learn about nicotine and tobacco products, as well as related products.
  • Learn how to communicate clearly about the area of work

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

24 weeks – tentative start date 12 August 2024

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a relevant course of study (e.g. public health, epidemiology or biostatistics) at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification).

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programmes, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Experience

  • Experience in research and/or in drafting reports
  • Experience in the subject area through academic work or research would be desirable
  • Experience in the subject area through scientific work or research would be desirable.

Languages

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of another UN language

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The allowance depends on the duty station and other external support (grant, scholarships, etc.) received by the intern. In Geneva, the maximum amount of the allowance provided by WHO is CHF 1680 per month. The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete. In addition, all interns in Geneva will receive a lumpsum of CHF 20 for each working day to buy lunch at WHO campus or elsewhere. WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

  • Please note that internships at WHO are very competitive and only a small number of applicants will be accepted every year. Only candidates under serious consideration will be contacted.
  • Living abroad is expensive and finding accommodation can be challenging. All intern candidates should be aware of these factors before they consider applying for a WHO Internship.
