Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head FLO, the intern may be assigned matters such as:

  • Provide legal support on disciplinary and administrative law matters, including analysing cases, drafting legal opinions, preparing legal documents, and advising on compensation, entitlements, and disciplinary actions.
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and provide comprehensive analysis on administrative, human resources, and public international law matters, including international human rights, humanitarian, and refugee law, in alignment with UNRWA regulations and practices.
  • Draft, review, and finalize a wide range of legal documents, including official correspondence, summary notes, briefing papers, contracts related to procurement, donor financing, project agreements, and other reports related to the Agency’s mandate and humanitarian principles.
  • Support the resolution of issues related to the privileges and immunities of the Agency and its personnel, including legal matters concerning the arrest and detention of staff.
  • Research and advise on administrative law and internal justice matters, focusing on staff misconduct, governance issues, and the internal administration of justice within UNRWA.
  • Assist in reviewing and advising on legal issues related to UNRWA’s administrative issuances and internal governance, ensuring legal compliance and alignment with the Agency’ s regulatory framework.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to raise awareness among UNRWA Jordan Field Office

staff on administrative and disciplinary law matters, and contribute to updating the Legal Office’s tools and resources.

  • Participate in and support legal meetings, training sessions, and events, including notetaking, report preparation, and outlining action points.
  • Perform other related legal duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Enrolled in a graduate program in law (Master’s degree or equivalent), or recently graduated with specialization in public international law, administrative law, contract or commercial

law.

  • Completed at least two full academic years of study towards a law degree, with courses in public international law, administrative law, contract or commercial law
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience, although prior work experience will be an advantage.

  • Acute ability to understand and work with different policies, procedures and work methods.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to demonstrate openness in sharing information, keeping people informed and preserving the confidentiality of sensitive information obtained throughout the course of work.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines under pressure.
  • Highly organized with strong political awareness and knowledge of administrative investigation theories and practices.
  • Proficient in research, analysis, and problem-solving, with the ability to produce clear, objective, and well-organized reports.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Proficient in standard software applications such as MS-Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Language

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.

Additional Information

BACKGROUND

The intern will be part of the Field Legal Office (FLO) at the UNRWA Jordan Field Office. Under the supervision of the Head FLO, the intern will support the provision of legal advice, training, and assistance on matters related to UNRWA’s mandate and areas of operation.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in Arabic is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the history and contemporary issues of the Middle East.
  • Familiarity with the UN Common system and practices
