Program Summary:
Project HOPE is providing humanitarian assistance to the conflict-affected population in Gaza. The current response portfolio focuses on Health, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, Protection, and WASH programming through Project HOPE programs and local partnerships.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary responsibility of the Midwife is to provide comprehensive maternity care in a challenging setting, ensuring maximum access and utilization of services by affected populations in areas without health care, and referring when possible. In addition, the midwives may be asked to support health care delivery through Project HOPE in the communities where they are residing.
This position will be based in Gaza. Local Nationals Only.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty with satisfactory results with or without reasonable accommodation. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care with a focus on maternity care in a challenging setting, ensuring maximum access and utilization of services by affected populations; including screening, initial response, and referrals for gender-based violence, mental health concerns, STI, malnutrition, anemia, newborn concerns etc.
- Conduct and supervise respectful labor, birth, newborn, and immediate postnatal care for women unable to access hospitals, provide initial stabilization of maternal and newborn emergencies, and manage referrals where necessary.
- Set up maternity care in new health centers, hospitals, and mobile clinics as directed by Project HOPE.
- Offer support and advice following events such as miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death.
- Assist in development and delivery of educational sessions for health care providers and beneficiaries. including topics on breastfeeding, danger signs, when to seek care, self-care in pregnancy, etc.
- Identify and care for survivors of Gender Based Violence in partnership with other team members.
- Collaborate with other health workers and support services as needed to ensure smooth implementation and integration of services.
- Report on clinical services offered and outcomes.
- Communicate with regard to needed supplies of life saving commodities.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Midwife certification and registration required.
- A minimum of two years’ experience as a midwife in public or private health facilities.
- Ability to provide and counsel on basic STI treatment and family planning preferred.
- Willingness to work in unstable areas.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Arabic and working English required.
- Must be able to demonstrate a positive working relationship with clients and colleagues with professionalism and integrity.
- Demonstrated skills in creative problem solving particularly in limited resource settings.
- Understanding humanitarian work / having worked with vulnerable populations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to humanitarian principles.
- Flexibility and Adaptability: Adapts to changes in work environment.
- Identifies with Project HOPE mission, vision and core values.

Work environment:
- This position is based in Gaza. Given the current conflict conditions, candidate must be able to work in a rapidly changing environment.
- Position will be in resource-deprived environment with austere living conditions.
- Travel for extended periods may be by air and/or other modes of transportation.
- Project HOPE employees may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship.”
