Mission and objectives

The UN Human Rights Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) is located in Lebanon and covers the following countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. As a convenor of regional dialogues on human rights issues, ROMENA-led activities involve government and civil society actors from the region. ROMENA’s primary function is to advance human rights in the countries that it covers through monitoring, reporting and advocacy on the human rights situation, and through active engagement with governments, including the provision of technical assistance, in cooperation with the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre in Doha.

Context

This UNV assignment is part of the Technical Cooperation Project in Saudi Arabia, which is part of the United Nations High Commissioner Office for Human Rights. The project has been designed to build national capacities in the field of human rights promotion and protection in Saudi Arabia. It has been developed pursuant to the signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights and Saudi Arabia through the Saudi Human Rights Commission in 2012.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the National Human Rights Officer at duty station, the national UN Volunteer specialist will Join the TCP- OHCHR team to support and assists its work on; international organizations and support for civil society. His/her roles will be as follow;

1. Collect reports of international organization working in the field of human rights and summaries issues of concern.

2. Support in gathering human rights materials in print, electronic and audio-visual formats and make them available to the project.

3. Support in designing training workshops and seminars.

4. Support in drafting concept notes, agenda, ToR’s and other materials related to the activities.

5. Drafting activity/weekly/monthly reports.

6. Participate as a resource person in organizing human rights activities such as forums and seminars.

7. Monitor and observe activities of UN human rights mechanisms including units dealing with civil society.

8. To provide support and assistant in the task as requested.

9. Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);

• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;

• Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.

• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;

• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;

• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Nationality

Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

Requirements

Required experience

3 years of experience in a national or international organizations. Advanced higher degree (Master degree or equivalent) in disciplines related to human rights may be accepted in lieu to the professional work experience. • Excellent oral and written skills in both Arabic and English. • Excellent skills in drafting, formulation of reports. • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;

Required education level

Bachelor degree or equivalent in Bachelor degree in law, political science, international relations, social science or other disciplines related to human rights in combination with 2 years of professional work experience in a national or international organizations. Advanced higher degree (Master degree or equivalent) in disciplines related to human rights may be accepted in lieu to the professional work experience.
