About MAG

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the Gulf of Guinea programme

Since 2020, MAG projects aim to enhance regional security by reducing at-risk, illicitly proliferated, or indiscriminately used of arms. In collaborating with ECOWAS Commission, this is achieved by strengthening the organisational and operational capacities of National Commission on SALW and national security sector institutions in the safe Management and Destruction of Weapons and Ammunition in those coastal countries like Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo.

About the role

The Community-based AVR Project Manager will provide support to the Sahel and West Africa regional team in the implementation of Community-based Armed Violence Reduction (CB AVR) programming. This encompasses various initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of armed violence, including community engagement, Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) risk education, and community risk-reduction strategies.

This role involves strategic planning, project management, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and ensuring coherence between community-based AVR activities and MAG’s broader mission of increasing peace, human safety and security, and socio-economic development in countries affected by armed violence contributing to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The role will be based in the Gulf of Guinea region and undertake regular travel within the Sahel & West Africa region.

About you

You will have relevant experience of working on development/humanitarian projects in relevant sector, such as peacebuilding, reduction of armed violence, conflict transformation, mediation at community-based level and/or Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) control. You will have extensive experience of developing, supporting and managing projects including implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation and contract compliance. You will have proven experience in the development of new business, including proposal development, networking and contract negotiations and experience of having developed successful relationships and negotiated with donors, government bodies, other NGOs and local partners. The postholder will have strong writing and representation skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally and to support and manage people will be key to the role.

Fluency in French and English is required.
