The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

Overview of CHAI’s work in Type 1 Diabetes and other Non-Communicable Diseases
Across the globe, more than 9.4 million people are living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) (T1D Index, 2024). This burden is growing – by 2040 there are expected to be almost 17.5 million people living with T1D, among which 4.2M will be children and adolescents under 25 (T1D Index, 2024). In low and middle income countries (LMICs), poor access to T1D care means many people die before they are diagnosed and receive treatment. For those receiving treatment, there are significant gaps in access to the highest clinical standard of care. Lifelong costs associated with managing T1D are also prohibitive and in many cases even catastrophic for people with T1D and their families.
The resulting disparities in health outcomes for people living with T1D around the world are enormous, with life expectancy at just 24 years in low-income countries and 37 years in lower-middle income countries (T1D Index, 2024). In contrast, in high-income countries, life expectancy for people living with T1D is comparable to those without. Hence, whilst care for T1D is complex and a daily challenge for people living with T1D, especially children and adolescents, the high life expectancy in high income countries is a testament that we have the tools available to enable people living with T1D to live long and high-quality lives.
To reduce this disparity and improve the lives of people with T1D in LMIC, CHAI has programs in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya and Nigeria to strengthen early detection of T1D at the primary healthcare level and improve access to adequate care pathways. In addition, CHAI has programs in a broader range of countries to strengthen NCD health systems, comprehensively address barriers to diagnosis and care, and strengthen collaboration across partners working on improving access to NCD diagnosis and care. Over the next 10 months, CHAI will lead the design of a collaborative initiative aiming at maximizing the reach and impact of investments in T1D diagnosis and care, involving several major development organizations collaborating to enact substantial change.
For this high-profile strategy project, we are looking for a highly motivated Senior Associate with outstanding strategic, analytical, communication and relationship management skills. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, and adhere to the core CHAI values of resourcefulness, entrepreneurialism, flexibility, independence, humility, and work ethic. This position will report to the Senior Manager, T1D.
This role is funded for 3–5 months, with the potential for renewal.
Responsibilities
- Lead research and analysis to identify high-impact interventions to address core gaps in access to T1D diagnosis and care across different types of countries, consolidating available research evidence, programmatic data and country & global partner insights.
- Prioritize (at a high-level) interventions across different types of countries, based on criteria such as expected health impact, sustainability, cost and fit with stakeholder priorities.
- Lead quantification of potential intervention impact and cost, identifying core impact metrics and potential KPIs.
- Contribute successfully to a collaborative, pragmatic and action-oriented team environment, taking a proactive and impact-oriented role within the context of the broader strategy project.
- Lead the development of reports and presentations to communicate findings to various stakeholders, including those with high levels of seniority.
- Cultivate strong relationships with key partners and stakeholders, understanding nuances in perspectives and objectives, fostering continued alignment of goals across partners, ensuring an open working relationship and adjusting pace where necessary.
- Engage with CHAI country teams, ensuring country government perspectives are adequately captured and represented in the strategy development process, and that key project outcomes are fed back to CHAI country teams and in-country stakeholders.
- Represent CHAI effectively to key partners and other country and global stakeholders.
- Any other duties as required by the Senior Manager, T1D.
- Up to 20% international travel required throughout the duration of this 3-5 month contract.
Qualifications
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree with strong academic performance
- Minimum 4 years of professional experience, in a role that demonstrates an ability to work independently and effectively in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment, manage complex projects, conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses and work across multiple teams
- Exceptional strategic skill set, structured thinker with demonstrated experience in strategy development
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills, and ability to use data to inform strategy
- Strong project management skills and the ability to work independently and effectively in a high-performance, dynamic environment and handle multiple priorities simultaneously
- Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and a proven track record of building strong & effective working relationships, including with individuals of varying levels of seniority and soliciting expert inputs
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English with the ability to represent CHAI externally
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to work effectively in a multicultural and remote environment
- Excellent proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word
- A balanced and open-minded perspective, with an ability to understand and appreciate different viewpoints and perspectives
- Strong commitment to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion

Advantages:
