Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) sits at the nexus of participatory mapping, community-led development, humanitarian response, open data and tech. With a talented and diverse team spread around the globe, HOT is an NGO which supports a dynamic global community of thousands of dedicated volunteers using maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. Working with humanitarian and development partners like the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, UN agencies, governments and others, the HOT community maps in solidarity with those affected by or at risk of disaster, contributing the maps and data aid workers need to do their lifesaving work.
About the Position
The Senior Manager, Business Development provides leadership in HOT’s relationship building efforts to successfully secure funding from institutional donors such as governments (US, European), multilateral institutions (World Bank, UN agencies, EU, regional development banks), and multi-donor/pooled funds in order to advance the global work of HOT. The incumbent leads or supports efforts that raise $5 million per year. They are a leading champion of institutional revenue (grants and contracts) and donor engagement across the organization, acting as a creative and entrepreneurial influencer and network-builder both internally and externally.
The incumbent will help develop and execute the strategy and operational plan to support Regional Hub Directors, Fundraising Specialists, and central teams in positioning HOT to successfully scope and compete for funding opportunities by responding with a quality process and product. They will build and maintain an effective business development system of tools, processes, and capacities across HOT teams. This includes collaborating across teams to pre-position, identify requests for proposals (RFPs), coordinate and write high-quality proposals for competitive funding opportunities, and build and steward relationships with priority institutional donors and external partners. The incumbent will provide technical assistance, support, and training to staff for new business development tasks and strategies from positioning through proposal submission, with a primary focus on competitive institutional funding mechanisms (grants and contracts) from USAID, World Bank, and other institutional sources. This position is situated within the Fundraising team which is tasked with ensuring HOT has the resources, relations, visibility, and positioning it needs to achieve its mission.
The incumbent will be highly-organized, process-focused, and enthusiastic about working with program teams across HOT to assemble compelling project ideas. They will enjoy conveying the impact of open data and digital technology in humanitarian action and international development. This position requires innovative thinking and creativity to package HOT’s programs and vision in ways that attract, retain, and scale donor support.
Essential Functions
Lead identification, positioning, and capture strategies for funding opportunities:

Research, identify, and track institutional funding opportunities that align with HOT’s mission and work.

Remain up-to-date and informed on the latest trends and opportunities in the institutional donor community, staying abreast of industry standards and USG (and other key institutional donor) regulatory environments and sharing recommendations with Hub Fundraising Specialists and the Senior Management Team.

Build donor and partner relationships at headquarters or institutional level through regular engagement to scope and generate opportunities, including influencing donor strategies.

Build and strengthen relationships with and knowledge of implementing partner organizations and represent HOT effectively in teaming and partnership negotiations as well as industry networks when relevant.

Coordinate current reporting requirements, working closely with project managers and the Portfolio Team to ensure reports due are timely and high-quality.

Develop and use donor engagement strategies, donor pitch decks, and capability statements.
Lead and coordinate the process for proposal development, grant writing, submission and follow up:

Lead the overall capability statement / concept note / proposal development with relevant team members including technical, operational, cost contributions, and all other relevant items within the submission package.

Review, edit, and write the final version of proposals and documents to ensure clear, cohesive, and impactful narratives, requesting input from relevant teams as needed.

Manage the development of complex proposals involving a consortia of partners and coordinate contributions from all parties, including guiding areas of collaboration and budget discussions.

Contribute to program design and development discussions in collaboration with HOT’s Regional Hubs and central teams.

Improve and further standardize HOT’s proposal development, review, and submission process, adopting industry good practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 7+ years of institutional fundraising experience with a demonstrated track record of success.
- Deep understanding of institutional donor trends, policies, and regulations (USAID, World Bank, etc.). Excellent written communication skills. English-language fluency required.
- Understanding of database management. Knowledge of Salesforce is a plus.
- Advanced skills with word processing and presentation software (e.g. Microsoft or G-Suite applications).

- Able to exercise a high level of organizational skill and initiative necessary to complete tasks with little supervision.
- A strategic thinker who has demonstrated resourcefulness in working collaboratively with various constituencies and solving problems.
- An individual with strong interpersonal skills, able to communicate with believable passion, the mission and spirit of HOT both verbally and in writing.
