The Protection Division (PXD) within IOM is responsible for specialized protection interventions aimed at addressing risks and responding to potential violations of rights as defined by international instruments, including migration, human rights, refugee, and international humanitarian law. PXD ensures the upholding and restoration of the rights of individuals vulnerable to violence, abuse, exploitation, discrimination, neglect, and deprivation. It also supports the integration of protection principles across IOM’s operations and initiatives.

As the thematic home for combating human trafficking, child protection, gender-based violence (GBV), xenophobia, racism, disability inclusion, and housing rights, PXD collaborates with IOM divisions, departments, and external stakeholders to address protection needs in both humanitarian and non-humanitarian settings. This is accomplished through six programmatic pillars: data, research, and learning; training and capacity development; advocacy and communications; convening and dialogue; direct assistance; and thematic guidance.

PXD plays a crucial role in implementing and integrating counter-trafficking (CT) initiatives into IOM’s global operations. It provides technical support and guidance to field missions, ensuring compliance with international protection standards.
