Overview

About CHAI:

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We make big changes that challenge what people think is possible to help millions of people stay healthy and live longer.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Today, thanks in part to CHAI’s efforts, over 20 million people in low- and middle-income countries have access to high-quality medicines. Drugs that used to cost US$10,000 per patient per year now cost US$45 per patient per year. See more on our role in catalysing the change here.

Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into sexual and reproductive health, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skillsets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

About The Role:

CHAI is currently seeking a Vice President of People (VPoP) to lead the development and implementation of a new people strategy that will be instrumental in helping CHAI achieve the ambitious goals set out in its new five-year strategy (available publicly here). Talent and enabling infrastructure has been identified as one of the five critical “pathways to change” for CHAI to achieve its targets over the next five years, and beyond. The VPoP will work closely with CHAI’s senior leadership team to develop and implement an innovative people strategy that is fit-for-purpose for CHAI’s needs.

This role requires a leader willing to take innovative approaches to ensure our most valuable resource – our 1700+ staff based globally – receive the development and support they need to achieve their maximum impact potential at CHAI. The VPoP will report to the Chief Operating Offer and there is flexibility to be based in any CHAI program country (with ~20% travel), subject to availability of work authorization.

Responsibilities

What you’ll do

The core role scope and responsibilities are expected to constitute the following with room for adaptation based on what you can bring to the role:

Talent management:

  • Build and execute a comprehensive talent strategy in support of CHAI goals and organizational strategy – spanning talent acquisition & retention, talent development, total rewards, and enabling infrastructure
  • Identify CHAI’s key talent needs to deliver on its five-year strategy – and enhance existing acquisition efforts and people development systems to meet those needs
  • Oversee design and delivery of a “learning and development” program, including a leadership development program for high-potential employees
  • Develop and administer a new organization-wide people performance management system, including support to all levels of management on goal-setting, feedback, coaching, and appropriate handling of performance issues
  • Lead succession planning efforts to ensure continuity in key leadership positions

Human resource operations and continuous improvement:

  • Manage, mentor, and support a team of ~25 HR professionals, including an experienced HR leadership team and diverse global functions (People Operations, HR Business Partners, Talent Acquisition, and Talent Development)
  • Lead, develop, evaluate, and continuously improve the performance of the HR function to ensure industry leading service to CHAI’s staff
  • Develop scalable and equitable policies and processes that work across countries and teams to support organizational growth
  • Oversee the strategic review and administration of CHAI’s global compensation and benefits systems to ensure equitable pay practices and benefits across the organization.
  • Oversee delivery of CHAI’s risk management and compliance priorities

Culture leadership:

  • Lead employee relations and regularly track employee feedback on culture, engagement and satisfaction – and advise senior leadership on actions needed to align CHAI’s organizational culture with its mission and values
  • Partner with CHAI’s Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) to ensure core principles of DEI are incorporated into all HR and talent initiatives, projects, and policies

Senior leadership involvement:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and HR partner to senior leadership; setting talent priorities, lead organization change initiatives, advising on employee relations, recognizing critical risks, and identifying opportunities for organizational development
  • Represent CHAI’s “People” function on the newly established Leadership Council and ensure that people development remains at the heart of CHAI’s strategy and policies

Qualifications

Who you are

We’d be particularly interested in speaking with you about the role if you have the following profile:

  • 15+ years of experience in results-oriented and fast-paced environments, with at least a few of those years in leadership roles focused on organizational development, talent management and/or human resources (you do not need to have held a formal HR titled role, but you should have significant leadership-level experience with people strategy)
  • Prior experience with HR processes (e.g. performance management, talent acquisition, succession planning, compensation and benefits, global HR compliance across geographies, etc), and a familiarity with best practices in these areas
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing HR strategies that support organizational goals and drive performance improvement
  • Proven ability to successfully lead complex change management initiatives at large organizations by building and securing trust with stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
  • Exceptional people leader who can manage and inspire teams, but also enjoys being entrepreneurial and will “roll up their sleeves to get stuff done”
  • Prior experience in highly diverse and multicultural organization, with time spent living and working in different geographies – ideally in resource-constrained settings
  • Deeply passionate about the type of transformational impact that CHAI is committed to (prior experience in global health or in a non-profit setting is not required, although would certainly be an advantage)
