Are you interested in making a career in the migration field? Open Cultural Center (OCC) is a non-profit organisation (NGO) based in Spain and Greece that works towards the inclusion of refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers by offering activities to both host-country nationals and third-country nationals.
One of the key areas of work of OCC is MigraCode Barcelona, which is a tech academy for refugees and migrants. It aims to bridge the gap between the demand for skilled people in the tech sector and people with a migration background who are eager to work in the tech industry. The project aims at fostering the labour inclusion of refugees and migrants while offering also soft skill trainings and psychological support.
For a period of 12 months, starting in July 2024, we are offering a Project Assistant volunteering position within OCC Spain, focused on supporting MigraCode team in Barcelona.
Main tasks
- Support on the follow-up of students, both during classes and remotely.
- Support on the development and improvement of the Web Development Syllabus.
- Availability to attend all the weekday and weekend classes and ensure the smooth running of both. Support the instructors during classes.
- Support the MigraCode team on the management of volunteers.
- Keep up to date the inventory of the office and supporting the team on IT issues when required.
- Support with communication content creation.
- General administrative tasks.
- Support the organisation of MigraCode events: Graduation, Kick-off, JobVersity, MasterClasses, Hackathons, Company meetups.
- Take part in the ESC activities (organisation of team building activities, awareness raising in schools, etc.).
- Support the rest of the team and participate actively in the organisation’s activities.
Position requirements
- Good command of English, both written and spoken. Spanish is a plus.
- The candidate has to be a driven person, interested in coding (fluency in HTML, CSS, JS and Git is a plus, but any profile interested in learning will be considered).
- Interested in participating in educational programs. The candidate must be patient and understanding. Experience in teaching is a plus.
- Willing to work in a flexible environment (with different hours and tasks).
- Sensible about what it is to work with people in vulnerable situations.
- Empathetic attitude is a must.
- Interpersonal and team working skills.
- Availability for a 12-month period.
- Being eager to work in an intercultural environment.
- Being motivated, proactive, open-minded & self-reliant.
- No problem with sharing an apartment/bedroom with other volunteers.
Volunteer requirements established by ESC program (*)
- Candidates must be between 18 and 30 years old.
- To have a legal residence permit in an EU country.
- Never having done an ESC volunteering before.
(*) Candidates that don’t meet these requirements won’t be able to be considered as potential candidates for this volunteer position.
What do we offer?
The project is funded by the European Commission through the European Solidarity Corps program. This means that volunteering provides:
- Travel costs coverage: Up to the limits established in the Erasmus+ Guide distance calculator from the volunteer’s region of residency to our center, and back.
- Free Accommodation: Provided next to our office, in the city center of Barcelona, Spain with other volunteers. The flat is fully equipped (kitchen, bathrooms, washing machine, etc.). Note: be ready to share your bedroom with other volunteers of the same gender.
- Monthly allowance: 310 euros per month.
- Insurance: Henner
- Free Language courses: Online but also in person, according to availability.
- Holidays: two days per month.
