Although there are numerous advantages, there are also challenges for the World Bank young professionals (YP) who take part in the program, which candidates should be aware of. Generally speaking, the YPs highlight two main challenges: 1) Understanding the institution and its work, and; 2) Maintaining a balance between personal and professional life.
1) Understanding the institution and its work
As in every new job, the first challenges for a new entrant is acquiring a sound understanding of the job to be performed and the organization in which s/he is placed. The World Bank Group is a complex institution, with great diversity in its areas of activity and co-workers’ profiles. Therefore, it can initially be challenging for a YP to gain a sound understanding of the job. The importance of the coaching and mentoring offered by the program is significant, since these enable the YP to take ownership of the organization’s work dynamics and operations.
2) Maintaining a balance between personal and professional life
Finding a balance between personal and professional life is another challenge described by the young professionals, considering that the World Bank YPP requires great dedication from them, involving trips, training and professional activities (the stretch assignment in particular). Thus, it is essential that the program participant learns how to reconcile the different demands between their personal life and work.
