The goal of the AFDB Internship Program is to provide those interested in international development with a greater understanding of the AFDB’s work in its mission to enhance economic growth in its Regional Member Countries (RMC). Those selected will have the opportunity to work and be supervised by more experienced professionals, where they will be able to develop networks and receive continuous feedback.

 

In pursuit of its mission, the OpenIGO network has prepared a comprehensive eBook and support and guidance services, with the aim of highly increasing your chances of success in these competitive processes. AFDB Overview

The African Development Bank (AFDB) was created in 1964 with the aim of promoting the economic growth and social development of its Regional Member Countries (RMC). As part of its recent strategy, the Bank will seek to tackle problems in countries suffering from economic frailty and violence, to encourage agricultural productivity to reduce poverty and hunger, as well as gender inequalities that slow economic progress in African countries. AFDB has sought to strengthen public-private partnerships, co-financing strategies and instruments for risk reduction in order to mobilize resources and attract new investment partners.

AFDB’s main focus: Fighting poverty and promoting socio-economic progress on the African continent.

Description of the AFDB Internship

What are the fields of study required for the AFDB Internship?

This internship program includes students and recent graduates from the most diverse fields of knowledge. The areas of study with the highest demand in this program are:

  • Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth

  • Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialization
  • Economy, Statistics

What are the tasks performed by the selected for the AFDB Internship?

  • Draft reports and other types of documents;
  • Collect and analyze data;
  • Take part in training and events with other members of the bank;
  • Prepare presentations;
  • Contribute to ongoing projects;
  • Perform other activities when required.

What is the duration of the AFDB Internship?

The internship duration shall be coordinated between the intern and the organization.

What is the weekly workload of the AFDB Internship?

The internship programs are full-time. Interns shall therefore work between 35 and 40 hours per week.

Where are the locations of the AFDB Internship?

Opportunities are distributed between the AFDB Headquarters in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) and its external offices.

When does the AFDB Internship start?

The initial date of the internship shall be coordinated between the intern and the organization.

Is there any feedback following the completion of the Internship?

At the end of the internship, the supervisor is in charge of preparing an assessment report of the intern’s performance.

Subsequent employment:

The internship program does not presuppose the candidate’s future employment, but the experience of working at AFDB will be a differential in the intern’s curriculum that will facilitate their entry not only in the AFDB but in other IGOs.

What is the education requirement of the AFDB Internship Program?

  • Have an undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s) and be enrolled in a graduate program (minimum master’s degree) at a recognized institution, or;
  • Have graduated from a Master’s program in the last 12 months.

What is the language requirement of the AFDB Internship Program?

Proficiency in English or French is required, with a functional knowledge of the other language. Knowing a third language relevant to the Bank can be an advantage in the selection process.

What is the age requirement of the AFDB Internship Program?

Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old.

What is the nationality requirement of the AFDB Internship Program?

Applicants must be citizens of an AFDB member state.

What are the competencies required for the AFDB Internship Program?

The main competencies required are:

  • Ability to leverage knowledge;
  • Ability to share knowledge;
  • Adaptability to multicultural settings;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Experience on projects that have a direct bearing on the mission of the Bank.

Candidates can participate only once in the Bank internship program.

When to apply for the AFDB Internship Program?

Internship opportunities are announced according to the needs of the AFDB units and the application period lasts up to one month.

How to apply for the AFDB Internship Program?

The internship application process comprises the following steps:

  1. Search for possible vacancies by area of interest on the AFDB internships page;
  2. Click in “Apply for this Position” and register at AFDB’s E-recruitment system;
  3. Fill out the form with your personal and professional information (Dependants, Educational Background, Employment History, References);
  4. Submit application.

Other information:

Submit an application for a vacancy as soon as the position is advertised, but no later than 11.59 pm (23.59 hrs) on the vacancy closing date. Vacancy closing dates are based on GMT.

What are the phases of the selection process for the AFDB Internship Program?

The selection process may vary depending on the department or office to which the intern is applying, but generally comprises the following steps:

  1. Submitting the application;
  2. Evaluation of the application;
  3. Competency-based interview;
  4. Selection notifications.

How is the AFDB Internship Program interview?

Short-listed candidates will be contacted via phone or Skype for the interview. The purpose of the interview is to check relevant information in the curriculum and to assess the candidate’s interest and knowledge to fill the position.

  • Maximum two-page Curriculum Vitae in Microsoft Word or PDF version;
  • Copy of the school enrollment Certificate or the Master’s degree;

Visa:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of obtaining the visa (if needed to do the internship).

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs of enrolling in a valid global medical insurance plan.

Accommodation:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for accommodation expenses during the internship period.
