Lack of proper nutrition caused by disease and inadequate food consumption are immediate causes of malnutrition seen mostly in low and middle income countries. Malnutrition therefore remains a core public health concern affecting the population especially vulnerable groups like children under five years, pregnant and lactating women and medical cases like HIV and TB. SDG 2 (End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture) articulate the need for achieving positive nutrition outcomes.
Healthcare workers and community health assistants should be able to understand and apply these concepts to help improve the nutrition outcomes of the target population which includes facility and community cases affected by under-nutrition.
What is the course objective?
To equip healthcare workers including community health assistants/volunteers, humanitarian field assistants with technical skills to handle uncomplicated cases of acute malnutrition.
Who should attend this training?
UN, Government and NGO staff including but not limited to healthcare workers, community health assistants and volunteers, program assistants and nutrition technical staff.
What are the key aspects of the training?
- Introduction to malnutrition and outpatient therapeutic care;
- Diagnosis and admission process;
- Requirements for OTP care;
- Management of SAM;
- Nutrition support, commodities, amounts, routine medication;
- Surveillance;
- Discharge criteria, follow up, home care, transfers;
- Management of MAM;
- Data collection and Reporting;
- Monitoring and Evaluation;
- Assessments.
What learning approach and language will be used in the training?
The training delivery method includes recorded sessions, PowerPoint presentations, articles, publications, documentaries, quizzes and assessments.

The training cost is US$ 400 which will cover the tuition fees, learning materials and certification.
