Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Secretariat of the CBD, Office of the Executive Secretary, Access and Benefits Sharing Unit (ABS). Under the general guidance of the Acting Executive Secretary and the direct supervision of the Head of the Unit (ABS), the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
Responsibilities
A. Develops awareness-raising material and carry out awareness-raising activities in collaboration with the Communication, Education and Public Awareness Programme (CEPA) of the Convention and with partners, addressing different target groups and stakeholders to support the ratification and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.
B. Organizes and carries out capacity-building and development activities, in collaboration with other staff of the Secretariat and relevant organizations/institutions, to support the ratification and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol, including the development of training materials and the organization of training events/workshops for governments and relevant stakeholder, in line with the long-term strategic framework for capacity-building and development to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework implementation.
C. Coordinates and promotes the exchange of views and experiences among Parties and relevant stakeholders on the ratification and implementation of the Nagoya Protocol at relevant meetings and events and the sharing of relevant information through the ABS Clearing-House.
D. Facilitates coordination and cooperation with partners in the implementation of the Strategic Framework for capacity building and development to support the effective implementation of the Nagoya Protocol by compiling and making relevant information on capacity-building needs, opportunities, activities and tools available on the ABS Clearing-House and at relevant meetings and by preparing reports on the status of implementation of the Strategic Framework.
E. Organizes, prepares documents for, and service meetings of the COP-MOP as well as relevant inter-sessional meetings under the Nagoya Protocol process, such as the Informal Advisory Committee on ABS Capacity-building, in accordance with decisions of the Conference of the Parties – Meetings of the Parties (COP-MOP) and of the Conference of the Parties (COP), in particular with respect to issues related to awareness-raising and capacity-building.
F. Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
G. Perform any other duties as may be assigned.

Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
TEAMWORK: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in International Relations, Political Science, Public Administration, International Development or related field is required.
A first level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of Five (5) years of professional and progressively responsible experience in the field of sustainable development or environment related programmes or public administration is required.
Work experience at the international level with capacity building and development is required.
Work experience in the United Nations (UN), Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAS) or any other similar organization is desirable.
Work experience with intergovernmental processes is desirable.
A minimum of Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment against this post is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
