In order to start a career with the organization, applicants must know what are the existing recruit­ment initiatives, their eligibility criteria and different stages of the AfDB YPP’s selection process, as well as have a broad understanding of the culture and values of this complex international organization.

This book was written and revised by a team of professors, human resources specialists, and intergovern­mental organization staff with a great deal of diligence. It is divided into 12 chapters, which have the following aims:

Chapter 01Introduction to the AFDB YPP

Presents the African Development Bank Young Professionals Program’s (YPP) characteristics, minimum application requirements, the recruitment process stages and young professionals’ assignment features.

Chapter 02The African Development Bank: Understanding the Organization

Presents the AfDB through its administrative organization, its history, its deci­sion-making system and strategic activities. This chapter is essential, since it is very common for candidates to have difficulties with understanding this complex organization during their various selection processes. Over­coming this difficulty is extremely important for those who wish to work at the AfDB, since knowledge about the organization and its strategies is essential during any of its selection processes.

Chapter 3 – International Financial Institutions’ (IFIs) Development Models: Timeline and Chapter 4 – The Foundations of New Institutionalism and New Public Management Applied to IFIs Policies are complementary.

Throughout their history, International Financial Institutions (IFIs) have been supported by different theoretical models to advance their international development strategies and policies. Knowledge of these models (particularly the current one) is essential for AfDB candidates, since they must present solutions to the questions posed during the selection process, which are in line with the organization’s way of thinking. Therefore, Chapter 3 presents a summarized history of IFIs’ international development models, from their creation until current times, while Chapter 4 explains the theoretical foundations of the current neo-institutional economic model, presenting its main premises and concepts and providing a study guide to help candidates gain a better under­standing of it.

Chapter 5 – AfDB Online Application Form

Presents and explains the AfDB YPP online application form in detail.

Chapter 6 – Crafting the Ideal Resume/CV

Assists candidates to craft a strong Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV), which is essential to reinforce their chances of success in the selection process and for them to stand out from other candidates. In this chapter, subjects such as the content and structure of an effective Resume, visual aspects and common mistakes will be covered and various tips provided. Chapter 07 – Dissertation and Thesis Abstract

Assists the candidate in writing excellent thesis or dissertation abstracts.

Chapter 08 – Writing an Effective Essay

Assists candidates in the process of writing an effective essay for the African Development Bank YPP.

Chapter 09 – Reference Letters

Helps candidates obtain effective reference letters, which can significantly contribute towards their suc­cess in the selection process. In this chapter, the following questions are answered: “What is a reference letter?”; “How is it different to a letter of recommendation?”; “Who should I ask for a reference letter?”; “How do I request this letter?”; and “What content should be included in a reference letter?”.

Chapter 10 – Preparing for the AfDB’s Online Tests

Chapter 11 – The AfDB Interviews
