In this 1-hour online course, you will learn how to make key decisions and apply best practices for setting up a safe and sustainable water trucking system for communities and camp settings with water challenges. As you go through the course, you will be guided by a WASH team and the community to make key decisions to plan and implement water trucking activities. You will start with learning about how to choose the right water trucking method based on community needs and water sources, and how to contract and select a local service provider. Then, you will practice testing and treating water sources based on different scenarios and using different tools. Throughout the process, you will learn key considerations for safeguarding, engaging, and communicating with the community, as well as how to monitor water trucking activities over time. At the end, you will reach a final review where you can practice applying what you have learned to implement a successful water trucking service for a local community.

Objectives:

  • Gain a practical understanding of the tools and resources required to design a comprehensive water trucking program.
  • Describe the process to conduct a market assessment of local water trucking services and map water sources.
  • Determine criteria to select a local service provider and inspecting a water truck reservoir.
  • Identify how to choose the right water trucking method based on communities’ needs and challenges in your targeted area of intervention.
  • Understand protection-related considerations when planning and monitoring water trucking activities.
  • Describe the process for testing and treating water from different sources, including jar testing, chlorinating water, treating a borehole, collecting and transporting samples, testing pH and FRC levels, and remediation.
  • Determine how to engage the community and design hygiene promotion messages to enable a safe and sustainable water trucking service.

Mercy Corps and DisasterReady designed this course for staff working in WASH programs, including MEAL and logistics teams, who have technical or non-technical roles/experience, and are seeking to strengthen their knowledge and skills in water trucking design, provision, and monitoring.
